SEBASTIAN BACH

Abachalypse Now

(Frontiers)

Unlike most live DVDs that focus on just one concert, Abachalypse Now from SEBASTIAN BACH includes three completely different live shows, all filmed in the summer of 2012. First up is Hellfest France – June 16th. A highly energized Baz and his band, consisting of guitarists Nick Sterling and Johnny Chromatic, bassist Jason Christopher, and drummer Bobby Jarzombek, take the stage on a beautiful, sunny afternoon in front of a massive field full of people. Somewhat surprisingly, Sebastian actually halts ‘Big Guns’ mid-way through and admonishes the crowd for not jumping up and down; the same routine is employed in ‘American Metalhead’, suitably renamed ‘Francais Metalhead’. But when an absolutely killer rendition of ‘Monkey Business’ is aired, everyone in attendance is 110% into the song.

Concert number two is Graspop Belgium – June 24th. Another outdoor European festival, but this time Mother Nature wasn’t so co-operative. Forced to play during a torrential rainstorm in front of an absolutely soaked audience – and at an hour much earlier than he would have liked – Sebastian actually orders a coffee on stage before kicking into ‘Here I Am’. Unfortunately there are glitches in the audio because of the weather; despite standing in puddles, the band played on.

The third segment, Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA – August 2nd, is perhaps the most interesting. Initially filmed for AXS TV, Sebastian and his group were required to sign a release agreeing to be part of the broadcast; however guitarist Nick Sterling refused. Always one to rise above adversity, Sebastian enlisted the help of some friends, resulting in a very unique performance. BLACK VEIL BRIDES guitarist Jinxx guests on ‘Big Guns’ and ‘Money Business’, while BVB bassist Ashley Purdy comes out to sing ‘Youth Gone Wild’ with Baz. Roy Z, who produced Bach’s 2007 album Angel Down, plays guitar on ‘(Love Is) A Bitchslap’. And guitarist Brent Woods from The VINCE NEIL Band lends a hand to ‘Piece Of Me’ and ‘18 And Life’. The 2300 fans who witnessed this in person were treated to something truly special.

Given the fact that Abachalypse Now features a trio of concerts occurring in a two-month span, song repetition was unavoidable. The hits such as ‘I Remember You’, ’18 And Life’, and ‘Monkey Business’ are all performed in triumvirate. However, ‘Slave To The Grand’ was only done in France, and ‘Dirty Power’ is exclusive to Belgium. All totaled, you get 28 tunes spread across three countries. And as an added bonus, the audio of Hellfest and Club Nokia are included on CD.
