NECROWRETCH

Putrid Death Sorcery

(Century Media)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 7.5

France blackened death with a huge dollop of neo-thrash is the order of the day here, NECROWRETCH coming across like CARNAL FORGE in their prime but more blackened and evil, more death, but just as scissor-beat laden and Teutonic-thrash lovin'. This debut full-length (which follows up last year's excellently titled Now You're In Hell EP) literally knows one speed, that is the ultra-polka, said scissor beat chopping along at, like, exactly the same bpm for the whole disc, any chance of nuance or subtlety totally wiped out, those scratched-voice vocals screeching through the whole thing, the production keeping it on the death side of black, but the tempo and riffs and the mad gnome at the mic keeping it on the black side of death; the single-minded speed, the unwillingness to go blast, and the non-stop riff-fest are what make up the thrash element here. What does it all mean in the end? Firmly in the mean median of all three, probably no one's favourite band but also a band that probably no one who likes it extreme could really find a valid reason to not bang heads with for 11 songs.
