VORUM

Poisoned Void

(Dark Descent)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 8.0

This debut from Finnish deathsters VORUM takes death metal to great places, no small feat for a first album. I love the in-the-red production, the forays into sludgier and grimier slow-motion doom metal sounds, and the general falling-apart-at-the-seams vibe of the faster stuff on here. When the band play speedy, it sounds positively raging, one can only imagine what is their live energy captured perfectly (which I recognize is one of those phrases that make your eyes glaze over in boredom, but I really do mean it here) on this disc, the feeling being one of rage and great fun all at once, the sound exploring many different aspects of death metal, from the brutality to the melody (don't worry, not much of that), the slow to the fast. Again though, for me it comes back to the production, the lively and slightly imperfect sound complementing the band's energetic and violent death metal attack perfectly. Great debut.
