Australian blackened death metallers DENOUNCEMENT PYRE here get even more intense and focused than on their already impressive full-length, World Cremation. I love the crazed SODOM-esque Teutonic thrash guitar solo intro (!) of the title track, but apart from a love of KREATOR-ish thrashing riff majesty, that's where the thrash ends and the black/death begins. The final two tracks on the album find the band slowing things down and drawing out the torture with a mid-tempo gallop, and they do that as well as they race along with all guns blazing. With a slick production sound, this one ends up sounding much more “serious” and less cult and raw than most Hells Headbangers fare, and it works wonders: this label knows how to pick 'em on all sides of the extreme scene. While this kind of treble-heavy riffing and blasting mixed with slower death-ridden fare has been done before, I like the middle ground between the genres these guys sit on, and dominate; they do it with an intense authority that would make many other black/death bands tremble. This is a solid 8.0, inching towards 8.5 for real diehard black/death fans.
