HARDWARES

AGAINST THE PLAGUES

Quaternion

(Against The Plagues)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 8.5

Chicago-based symphonic blackened death metallers, AGAINST THE PLAGUES, features former members of MALEVOLENT CREATION, VADER, LOST HORIZON, LUCIFERION and BEHEMOTH. The pedigree of talent this band possesses on its four-song EP, Quaternion, is quite lethal. ATP creates a common ground where melodic death metal and symphonic black metal meet. It’s a powerful and majestic blend of furious riffs, harsh barking, blistering leads, militaristic marching drum beats and symphonic keyboard accents. The music is tight, rhythmically technical, precise, mechanical and neck-snapping powerful. On their previous releases, the band wore its DIMMU BORGIR and Behemoth influences on its collective studded-leather sleeves more prominently. In fact, 'Great Are The Eyed' from 2007’s The Architecture of Oppression sounds like it could have been lifted straight off of Death Cult Armageddon. However, on Quaternion, they’ve toned down those elements and have relied on their own sound to shine through. Even though Quaternion treads on familiar territory, it will leave you wanting more.
