KAMIKABE

Aberration Of Man

(Unique Leader)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 8.0

Pittsburgh-based technical death band KAMIKABE are a technical death metal band on Unique Leader, so there's not really going to be much in the way of surprises here, despite the whole album being one fun labyrinthine display of noodling wheeling and dealing technical death (or, given the situation, because of that... or something). This, the band's first full-length after a couple of EPs, sounds like dudes who have been plying their craft for way longer than they have. Those ultra-heavy sub-bass drops bring the modern, near-core edge, but mainly this is grinding death like DYING FETUS or more straight-ahead death like SUFFOCATION. Closing track 'Ungoliant' shows the band can have a bit of a sense of drama and tension, as well, which is nice: it can't always be all pummel all the time, right? And the bass tone in the intro of the excellently titled 'Only The Dead Rest' is pure Dan Lilker worship. Hails for that! Definitely slightly better than average for technical death and way better than any deathcore band, Kamikabe are worthy of any death metal fan's time.
