AEON

Aeons Black

(Metal Blade)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 8.0

Definitely always had a soft spot for these straight-laced Swedish death metallers, even if it recently came to light that I always thought they were a different death metal band that sounded identical, who were once on World War III Records (anyone? Because I'm lost here...). Still, I dig this AEON and have for their past few albums, all delivering—as this one does, big time—a quality performance of no-frills death that skirts American (think DEICIDE) and European (nearing BEHEMOTH with a slight, slight blackened touch) sounds. I mean, considering that for the past six years I actually thought Aeon and some other death metal band were THE SAME BAND, it's no surprise that there are no surprises here, spare the kinda refreshing brief instrumental “Aftermath” at mid-album. But, good grief, do these guys do this as good as anyone or what? On their fourth full-length, Aeon answer that question with a huge, resounding, growled-like-the-Cookie-Monster “fuck yes.”
