BISON B.C.

Lovelessness

(Metal Blade)

Reviewed by : Kelley Simms
Rating : 7.0

Vancouver’s mighty BISON B.C. crushes all in its path with its burly, doom/stoner-laden riffery, charging rhythms and aggressive barks on its fourth release, Lovelessness. Producer Sanford Parker (YOB, PELICAN, NACHTMYSTIUM) has managed to capture a raw sound to compliment the band’s ferocious appetite for aggression. Bison B.C. pretty much continues to walk the same path as MASTODON, PRIESTESS and HIGH ON FIRE, but on this release, perhaps just a bit further away. As with all Bison B.C. releases, it’s all about the crushing SABBATHy riffs, but if you aren’t paying attention, you’d think it was the same song for almost 45 minutes. The songs are just too long to hold one’s attention. They try to instill enough dynamic tempo variation and good transitions from the slower to the faster segments, but compared to its game-changing last release, Dark Ages, this release doesn’t quite measure up. That’s not to say there’s nothing good on tap here and I think that fans of the band and of its sound will be satisfied.
