MALIGNANCY

Eugenics

(Willowtip)

Reviewed by : Greg Pratt
Rating : 8.5

Despite forming in the extreme metal underground over in Yonkers, New York, in 1992, MALIGNANCY has only released three full-lengths. Which is alright, in a way: I seriously doubt anyone's brain could handle brutal technical death metal of this level on a more regular schedule. As far as the doodly, grinding, mind-melting sub-sect of technical death/grind goes, man, I'm hard pressed to think of a band who does it better than these guys. There's a reason why grindcore is more or less the best music in the world (in a three-way tie with death and thrash, if you ask me), and this band sums it up nicely with that wound-up snare crack, the high-tension stops and starts, the insane amounts of energy flying out of every twist, turn, and unexpected (yet completely expected) corner this one races around. Sometimes I wonder about the years going on, the albums that sound like this adding up, the indistinguishable songs all blending together, and I think, Do we need another album like this? But then I stop and really think about it, and the answer, of course, will always be yes.
