ALL HAIL THE YETI

All Hail The Yeti

LA-based Southern groove metal quartet ALL HAIL THE YETI conjure up a wall of distortion with a thunderous roar on its self-titled debut album. The band has cultivated its sludge metal, hardcore and groove-laden hard rock influences to form a solid, rock ’em sock ‘em unit. The band’s 11 tracks of modern metal is mixed with a doomy/sludgy old school mentality by taking lessons from BLACK SABBATH, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY and CROWBAR. Mostly, AHTY stay in the sludgy-yet-melodic mode while a frenzy of down-tuned, fuzz-laden riffs and turbulent feedback gloriously rings in your ears. “The Art of Mourning” harkens back to the brutal Old West days as banjo and harp surprisingly collide with bludgeoning riffs and thunderous double bass. On CD finale “Judas Cradle,” the aggression subsides to chirping crickets, croaking bull frogs and noisy cicadas. It’s a surprisingly soothing conclusion to the angst that precedes it. Just for the hell of it, if you follow out the song, you’ll hear 15 more minutes of continuous insect sounds. Brilliant! (Tool anyone?).
