Six-headed Vienna-based traditional power metal maestros DRAGONY just might be stubborn enough to carve out a notch in the over-saturated, dime a dozen, European power metal genre. The band’s knack for mythical and magical story-telling is pulled off with aplomb on its debut release, Legends. Dragony cultivate their sound from the best influences of the genre based on the classic, true European power metal played by stalwarts such as HAMMERFALL, EDGUY, HELLOWEEN and SONATA ARCTICA. The ten tracks on Legends are primarily mid-tempo with uplifting harmonies, beautifully-crafted melodies with hummable hooks. One of the highlights of the CD is the guest appearance by PRIMAL FEAR’s vocalist Ralf Scheepers on ‘Burning Skies.’ It’s a given that Dragony aren’t doing anything differently, and some may argue that they play typical, cliched, European power metal, but the band manages to capture the essence of the genre without being too frivolous.
