Swedish band CLOUDSCAPE combine melodic power metal with the best parts of classic rock, prog rock, ’80s metal and AOR. As a gateway to progressive and straightforward melodic rock and metal, Cloudscape creates a magical blend of powerful vocal harmonies, strong melodies, and catchy hooks. On its fourth full-length release, New Era, the band is technically skilled but not overly complex on the 12 tracks, yet maintains its commercial accessibility. Modern melodic metal influences such as EVERGRAY, SYMPHONY X and PAGAN’S MIND meet classic, old-style rock of AEROSMITH, SCORPIONS, and JOURNEY. The nearly nine minute “Voyager 9” with its Sci-Fi atmosphere and simulated spaceship noises are combined with melodic riffs, a la Journey, complete with a great guitar tone and orchestral keyboard sampled accents for more dramatic effect. “Pull the Brake”’s dramatic rhythm builds off the melodic keyboards and crunchy riffs. CD finale “Heroes” mixes ’70s style gongs and mellotron with a modern touch complete with crunchy riffs, powerful vocals and an uplifting chorus. New Era has a great mix of styles, variation and dynamic which makes the disc a pleasurable listening experience.
