DOWNSPIRIT

Bulletproof?

(Metalville)

Germany’s Downspirit is the brainchild of Ex- FREEDOM CALL/SYMPHORCE guitarist Cedric “Cede” Dupont. In 2009, Dupont’s wish was to fulfill his lifelong dream by forming a band that played some bad ass blues-infused rock and metal. The band’s debut, Point of Origin, received some decent kudos and hinted at what the band could achieve. On its sophomore release, Bulletproof?, Downspirit manage to capture the essence of ’80s hard rock and modern metal with a distinctive bluesy flavor; slide guitar, banjo and harmonica is morphed with heavy, down-tuned riffs. Vocalist Steffen Lauth’s smooth, melodic tone is met with just the right amount of gruffness. If you’re ultra-picky, some of the songs sound a bit of the same ol’-same ol’. However, this shouldn’t put too much of a damper on things because Downspirit has a lot to offer. Their blues/rock hybrid, modern songwriting skills, strong melodies and catchy hooks keep getting better with each album.
