This Ottawa-based band sound like they’ve spent a lot of time getting ready for this debut album, and kudos to them for that. The tunes live in a grey area between Euro goth metalrock like TIAMAT or MOONSPELL or one of those other bands that are easy to make jokes about, and a distinctly more North American radio-ready rock space, almost veering into post-grunge 4/4 mope-rock turf at times. Then come the duelling melodic melodies and double bass to bring in the trad metal sounds, and it’s hard to not get caught up in this band’s skill and love for what they’re doing. Cuts like ‘Wine For Your Sorrows’, afforded a bigger production sound, could be the kind of thing you hear while shopping for groceries in a world only slightly better than this one. Fans of goth-related subgenres of metal who are needing something a bit more grounded in a concrete reality (or fans of base-level metal stompers who want something a bit more fantastical), check this one out, especially if they can boost up the productions values a bit next time out.
