Boasting the impeccable vocals of Mike Vescera, the shredtastic guitar skills of Chris Impellitteri, the syncopated pounding of Jon Dette (replacing Scott Travis) and the four-string precision work of Rudy Sarzo, ANIMETAL USA is a highly-technical music-making machine. It’s a who’s who list of veteran metal musicians. The band was formed as a tribute to the original 1996 Japanese band ANIMETAL. Anime is huge in Japan, so the band’s anime-influenced image is as visually stunning as its musical prowess. Their makeup, costumes and character names cater to the anime, visual kei, kabuki, historically-based Japanese culture. A certain percentage of every song on the band’s self-titled debut (now being released in North America with four bonus tracks) is original music, but lyrically — as well as a lot of the main melodies — are full-on Japanimation series covers, sung in English. To be able to describe Animetal USA as a supergroup without abusing the word speaks volumes. Animetal USA is not just a cover band and they are certainly not a KISS ripoff. Don’t let their image and makeup fool you, Animetal USA is badass.
