If we’re being entirely transparent here, I really don’t like it when bands use numbers in place of a word in their band name, song titles, or album names. And I don’t really know of anyone who doesn’t hate that. Anyway, that aside, New Jersey’s CRAWL 2 CHAOS have clearly played their fair share of grimy bars in their time, as the metal, dirt, and rock practically spills off of every note here in this blue-collar display of heavy club metal. Taking cues from ’80’s thrash (some of the riffs are pretty MEGADETH) and early ’90’s groove hardcore/metal (BIOHAZARD, PRO-PAIN; see ‘End Of Days’), the band struggles with a bit of an oppressive monotony due to the usual indie-band trappings: a vocalist who is trying—and getting close, see the title track—but not quite reaching the highs and lows, and a production that emphasizes all the mids, all the plodding, all the energy-sucking. But given time and a bigger budget, the dynamics that these guys have will shine through bigger and better. For now, there are hints of what could be, such as the excellent ‘Suffer Kate’, and ‘The Growing Unknown’, which is kinda like discovering some cool, second-tier thrash band on the Power 30 back in the day or something (see: DEFIANCE, WHIPLASH, HEATHEN).
