DARK TRANQUILLITY Zero Distance EP (Century Media) Reviewed by : Mark Gromen Rating : 6.0

19 minute, five-song offering from the consistent Gothenburg outfit. The title cut opens, with familiar elements, albeit in hushed tones and with piano, topped by Mikael Stanne’s slightly sinister vocals. Follow-up ‘Out Of Gravity’ slows things down, even further, wisps of orchestral keyboards beneath that modern, machine-gunned mechanical staccato riffing. ‘Star Of Nothingness’ is a short (2:07) ethereal instrumental. ‘To Where Fires Can Not Feed’ picks up the pace slightly, but like its surroundings, more about atmosphere than speed or ferocious demeanor. Cool guitar effect in the later half though. ‘The Bow And The Arrow’ finale gets a little gallop going, oh so briefly. As a stop-gap Ep, certainly scratches the itch for new DARK TRANQUILLITY and seems they worked all the demons out here, so full steam ahead on the next full-length. In the meantime, NOT the place for interested neophytes to begin an investigation.
