Well, here’s something, an indie band taking a killer production sound and utilizing it for some great music with tons of personality, a sound that arrives halfway between MORBID ANGEL and PANTERA, kinda like all the great forgotten promises of 1993 fully realized. I especially dig the sludge halftime stomp of opener ‘Glorious Destruct’ and closer ‘Doomstone’, the super weirdo riffing of the insanely named ‘The Pirate Life’, and the Pantera bar-band-rock-done-right of ‘Hammer Of Thor’. This Virginia-based group (here on their debut full-length, which follows up an ’07 EP, CCCXXXIII), gets a bit stiff and ham-fisted at times, and those are the album’s weaker moments, when it’s bar-band Pantera time. But really, I’m hearing lots of personality, a band that’s taking the most extreme moments of Anselmo and the boys and actually harnessing them for the sake of dastardly deathly good, not battle of the bands bad, as this is way more Floridian death sludge mixed with freaky goth-tinged thrash than it is groove-band muscletime workouts.
