Although this is a brand new release, the show contained within is nearly two years old. It was filmed in May 2008; that’s well prior to the release of Chickenfoot – Satriani’s band with Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith. That being said, Live In Paris features 22 instrumental songs with a running time of two hours and 15 minutes. The term virtuoso is inadequate as Joe is so much more than a master of the guitar. His astonishing, flawless performance makes the ultra-complex seem unbelievably easy. Special mention must also be given to Stu Hamm’s bass solo – another work of genius. Numerous camera angles are employed: side, front, up-close and balcony views all offer a unique perspective of an incredible show. Unfortunately, the added visual effects nearly ruin the viewing experience! Blurred 3D imaging, exaggerated coloured shadows and the super-imposing of digital graphics distract from, rather than enhance the musical magic being created on stage. These optical echoes, at times, make the production seem like a tricked-out MTV video gone wrong, as opposed to a brilliant live presentation from one of the best guitarists on the planet. Bonus features consist of a 40-minute interview. Live In Paris is also available as a double CD set.
