COBALTLandfill Breastmilk Beast(Profound Lore)Reviewed by : David Perri Rating : 8.0 |
|
Inane album title aside, Cobalt’s latest effort effectively builds on the success of last year’s tour-de-force Eater Of Birds, and continues to further the quickly growing Cobalt legacy. Piercing through with its potent blend of warm yet esoteric black metal, the Colorado duo of Erik Wunder and Phil McSorley understand that black metal is a fierce and ugly beast, but that its underlying philosophy is a non-conformist one (if only all the Darkthrone-clones out there would take note); as such, Cobalt indeed conforms to no one while presenting its bastard breed, the band slipping and turning through scenes and styles to end up exactly where it wants to unconventionally be. And then Landfill Breastmilk Beast ends with a dualistic 29 minute ambient drone/lone guitar cover of Nausea’s ‘Extinction’. God damn.
