DESTRUCTOR

Storm Of Steel

(Auburn)

Reviewed by : Chris Tighe
Rating : 7.0

Destructor spewed out a little noticed gem of an album called Maximum Destruction in 1985 which screamed “heavy metal” from the leather and studs-laden front cover band pic to the lyrical thrust (including a none too subtle proclamation of “Smash your heads with power!” on the album sleeve). Over 20 years after that era of innocence, the band was asked to headline a German festival (Keep It True VIII) and so they decided to issue this limited edition EP to promote the appearance. Unlike the recent putrid reformation album from fellow ‘80s bangers Hallows Eve, Destructor prove the validity of their continued existence on their release. Parallels to Canadian greats Exciter are strewn throughout here. The title track - original 1990 and updated versions included - crushes in wall-of-sound power metal bliss like something off of Heavy Metal Maniac and the two new songs (from the forthcoming Forever In Leather full-length) include the same shout backing vox found on recent Exciter releases. The take-no-prisoners intensity, rhythmic aggressiveness and no-life-'til leather ethos are a blast and a welcome reminder of a more debauched time. The EP is rounded out by a demo of another new track and two live tracks (one of which was recorded at the 2004 BW&BK festival).
