ANATHEMA - Kick Off Debut North American Tour

Hard to believe, but the Englishmen, brothers Cavanagh (Vince, lead vocals/guitar and Danny, guitar/backing vocals) have only played the Milwaukee Metalfeast (in 2000) and acoustically, as openers on a handful of dates with Steven Wilson's BLACKFIELD ('11). Inconceivable that I'd be attendance at both those, so when it was announced ANATHEMA would start their maiden voyage at Underground Arts (a relatively new venue in downtown Philly), just had to be there. No first night jitters, in fact they were like caged animals, ready to pounce, mingling for impromptu photos and autographs beforehand. With female accompaniment, Danny was content to add keyboards and take center stage, only when Vince, sporting a flopping Robert Smith/SIMPLY RED hairstyle turned his back/walked away from the crowd. Former shoe-gazing French black metallers ALCEST opened, offering a hazy, trippy, psychedelic sound that offered only glimpses of their past and when they did rev it up, came across closer to Love-era THE CULT than anything else.
