DARK TRANQUILLITY – Spreading Swedish Heavy Metal In Atlantic City

The East coast’s gambling Mecca saw DARK TRANQUILLITY stop at the House Of Blues, housed in the Showboat Casino, as a snow storm loomed over the ocean town. Sadly, the Dark ones were on first, supporting KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, but such is the fate of touring in the States. Second night of the tour and in the cavernous concrete bunker that is HOB, it took until ‘Monochromatic Stains’ till Mikael Stanne’s vocals weren’t mush. In addition to a pair off the as-yet-unreleased We Are The Void (although ‘Dream Oblivion’ and ‘At The Point Of Ignition’ can be heard via the Swedes’ MySpace, the Dark lords had time for only five other songs, hitting Fiction hardest, with a trio, the opening ‘Terminus’, ‘The Lesser Faith’ and ‘Icipher’. After a song or two, the kids down front, planted at the rail to get a glimpse of Killswitch, were saying, “not too bad.” In a bath of red and pink lights, the band criss-crossed the stage, his mouth agape, arms often flailing, the denim shirted Stanne headbanged or sang from a crouch, atop the monitors. With his hair cut and beard, he bears a resemblance to classic Draconian era Nick Holmes (PARADISE LOST). Ending with the aptly entitled Final Resistance’, much of the set was mid-paced and tuneful, the newbie ‘Ignition’ standing out as the heaviest offering. Not sure why they didn’t opt for a ‘Best Of’ introduction to an admittedly new audience, or more speedy material (especially given the frenetic act that followed), like ‘Focus Shift’ (OK, another Fiction tune), ‘Damage Done’, even ‘The Treason Wall’, but then again, they’re coming back for a headlining tour in May.
