One of the best pieces of advice that I ever received about working out in regards to heavy weights and seeing what others are doing at the gym is to

"Check your ego at the door"

cheers fellas keep up the good work!

Learning to do real squats ... sculpting tha booty!
The stepmill has become my friend, as well. WELL, actually, it isn't my friend yet. It hurts me.

All the better reason to not bother with a gym and do that shit at home.

Ahhh, yes. I was looking into that as well. I don't know if I'm ready for the deadlift, yet! I have to gain more confidence in the weights section of the gym. I know it's stupid, and shouldn't matter, but I tend to feel very inadequate in terms of my workout abilities around all of those huge dudes. It will come, though! I should just go balls out, buy an Animal shirt, rock it, and go crazy with my 20lbs of weight. ahahahaha

Sounds like you're well on your way! The huge dudes are usually eminently approachable. It's the bar stars with the affliction t's and the friday night chest pump sessions that you have to watch out for!

And don't forget. The huge dudes had to start from their scrawny beginnings just like anyone else.

Genetics or not, juice or not, it takes phenomenal commitment. I find those guys tend to be the most personable.

It's the crossfitters and affliction/mma dudes that have the most attitude, imo.

Who are the cross-fit/mma dudes? I'm not sure I know who you're referring to.

As for the ripped monkeys, I've never spoken to them, but I often want to tell them to work more on their legs. They often look like bobbleheads (upper bodies) with stick legs.

Bros with Tapout shirts who can do MORE reps than you, pencilneck!!

but that's alright. You'll get the last laugh when they rupture various muscles in their bodies.

Edit: It's not just bros though... There's She-Bros too.

They're there. Every gym has them.

Unfortunately.

If you can't see them, you might just be one of them. :)

My complaint of the day: how pussified most gyms are becoming these days.

Seems all the old-school gyms are dying out or getting gobbled up by the TRX/Crossfit bosu-ball loving, kettlebell-swinging, etc. crowd.

ah well.

It's because more people are going to the gym to stay healthy, because our jobs don't keep us fit. When most people had a job that kept them on their feet, walking around, carrying stuff, it wasn't an issue. I mean, there was a time when even an office job would involve a lot of walking, but now you don't even have to come in to the office at all. The only people who'd go to a gym were athletes, bodybuilders and other people trying to truly achieve peak physical condition (in one manner or another). Nowadays it's mainly people whose interests generally lie elsewhere, but don't want their physique to suffer for it.

That said, most of them could easily do 90% of that shit at home, for the price of a few months' membership.

That's true. Doing the whole gym membership thing is unnecessary, in most cases.

But there's also some lower-end, less glitzy gyms throughout the city that have reasonable rates and a low douchebag quotient. The advantage of going to one of those is the experience of getting out to your work out.

When I get to the gym--which, because I'm student I don't pay for 'cause it's part of my being a student--I feel more pumped. I'm ready to get serious on that work out.

At home I do like 5 push ups, a sit up, then grab an oreo.

It's all mental for me.
