It's very good. I enjoyed it a lot. It was like Guinness but with more roasty, malty flavour and some smokey notes. It's like they took their formula and improved on it basically.

I also tried the Amsterdam Tempest tonight. Not bad at all, but kind of generic if you ask me. There was almost no nose on this, and the taste was very similar to any generic stout out there. I won't be getting it again I don't think, but it wasn't bad at all. Just kinda forgettable.

All the others are down the drain for me, Orange, Green Tea, Pumpkin, etc. Being the reviewer I am, I will still buy it and try it. Hey, if they got the Miami Weiss down, how hard would it be to get a black ipa down. Plus, black ipa is basically a stout/ipa mix. Garrison brewery made the first beer I tried like that and it was the best of my two favorite worlds in one bottle. Church Key brewery is pretty basic. They are a local Ontarian brewery which resides in Church Key. Their lagers/ales/pilsners are all very bland to me. A Smoked approach could be interesting though. Love me some smoked beer. Agreed...

Some beer lessons for our young friend.

Sanitation: Depending on the size of the brewery they will use food grade chemicals to sanitize their equipment, which are highly diluted in water and evaporate before the brewing process starts. Because the larger breweries work in such closed loops they probably use steam to sanitize everything.

Water: Most breweries will use their local municipal water to brew with. Homebrewers will actually add burton salts to the water to get their local or filtered water to match the water in say Dublin or Munich etc.. Again the lager breweries will not add this to their beers.

Brewing regardless of where its brewed is still grains (including rice), hops water, and yeast. Some breweries may use hop extracts which still provide the alpha and beta acids. Microbreweries will add adjuncts (anything you can imagine pumkin, juniper berries, cherries, candy sugar etc..) This is purely based on the style of beer that is being made.

Fining agents, this is what helps clear the beer, Irish Moss is used (kelp) and Isinglass (dried fish bladders). I use Irish Moss in my beer if I'm making anything other than a stout.

Thats pretty much whats in beer.

The macro beers like Miller, Bud, Molsen, Heineken etc.. are all simple lagers or pilsners, these are the basic most ingredients in a beer. When you have a micro brew they're mostly better styles of beers ales, wheat, stouts, etc.. These are beers that usually sway from the bland lagers and pils and use more flavorful yeasts, more flavorful hops, and specialty grains to add color and body.

Has nothing to do with chemicals its the style of beer my friend that you dont like.

As for Great Lakes... most of their stuff does blow, but i'm a fan of the pumpkin, and the Winter Ale last year was fantastic as well imo.



About the Tempest, i am leaning towards Herra... it's probably much better with age. My plan is I will buy three and try one fresh, and then another in about 6 months, and then another next year. I have learned myself though that not all highly regarded imperial stouts are for everyone. The Southern Tier Oat is probably the highest rated of the Black Water Series, and it may have been my least favourite. The Tempest is getting some pretty favourable reviews though, so i am curious to see if i side more with you guys, or other people.

Woah the bottle? They have them in six-packs now? I had it on tap and in a can and from what I vaguely remember, they are basically identical in taste and body. It's truly an amazing beer I hope to see for many more years to come.

You're right, I did. It was in a single bottle, right? Not a six pack which is why I didn't make the connection. Yes, peat water. eeww.

Ahh.. I knew there was another great lakes I loved... Winter Ale was easily their best.

I went out and bought Chokolat and Javah just for shits again, lol.

LOL not sticking it to him, like the rest of everyone here I hate the Macro brews but from a technical stand point what they do is nothing short of amazing. There are 4 key ingredients in their beers, water, grains, hops, yeast. Hops and grains are effected by weather, soil conditions, and any other number of variables that can effect the crops and the flavors of them yet they make it all the same year after year millions of gallons of consistency.


With that said I drank one of these last night, sad that they're no longer brewed in Chicago and it tastes like the hop build has changed slightly but its still a pretty solid IPA not overly bitter and very flavorful.

A buddy of mine is going to Pennsylvania. If you were to recommend one or two American brews to be brought back. What would you recommend? I know, it's hard, but anything would be helpful.

Oh ya, you are right about that seasonal. Also, I keep getting all those Blackwater Series mixed up. This year I was bored of St Peter's, maybe my pallett has become more refined, but now it seems I prefer Imperial Stouts

I had my first Beerlunch today. :)

Gave Rolling Rock another try, I think the taps must have been dirty or something the first time I had it, because it was much nicer this time. Simple, drinkable.

Lancaster is a small PA brewery that makes really good beer. You can’t get it in New York. Troges is another PA gem, but their stuff is more widely available.

I recommend these from those breweries.
Lancaster Hop Hog IPA, and Milk Stout
Troges Perpetual IPA, and Trogenator Double Bock (Nugget Nectar is out of season)

I should also mention that PA has some weird distribution laws where you can only by anything smaller than a case at a bar, and you can only buy cases at a beer distributor. Your buddy might need to go into a bar and buy a six pack to go. Not sure if the whole state is like that, but everyplace that I have been is. It’s expensive to buy a whole case of a craft brewed IPA, and makes it hard to sample the local brews

That's because it name is so long and awkward. :lol:

I just picked up a couple three bottles on my lunch break so i hope it lives up to how good it is supposed to be. I'll age a couple of them, and at only a dollar more than the Tempest stout, what a fuckin' sweet deal. $7.55 for this, and also the La Fin du Monde at the same price is fantastic. If i happen to not like it for some reason, i'll return it.

I know they serve Pliny the Elder in Philly, though, I'm not sure if that's just on draft. If not, Have him get as much as possible!
