4 Stars = Classic Here is a great, but forgotten Vampire/black comedy from 1986. Grace Jones (she's scary enough anyway) is the head Vampire in a strip club filled with Vampires. Chris Makepeace, who looks just like a young Mel Gibson, & his buddies are looking for a stripper for a frat party. What ensues is great comedy/horror entertainment, as Chris finds out, he & his friends have entered a nest of Vampires & try to escape with their juglar veins intact! Smart & witty dialog, great editing, convincing make up, a director with love for the genre, & great chase scenes make this one of the better Vampire films of the 80's! A direct precedent for "Dusk til Dawn!' "Vamp" 1986 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBHaW4ePu80

Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
5 Stars = Masterpiece Few horror movies, if any, in the last ten years match the intensity, suspense, dread, action, acting, direction, character study, & just the up in your face horror of "The Descent!" A group of women descend in to a cave that is supposed to be already explored, at least that is what they all think, except Juno, who has actually taken them to a uncharted cave system. Juno wants them to be the first to explore it. So our story starts, after a prologue of Sarah, Juno's best friend (or should I say, biggest guilt?) loses her husband & daughter in a car wreck, & the group of friends meeting each other after a long absence, at a cabin in the woods. If you're claustrophobic, then don't watch this film, as the women crawl, climb, & dig their way in to the cave. In a terrifying scene, Sarah gets stuck in a small passage way. Her friend Beth, crawls back to talk her out of panicking, so she can get Sarah out. As this starts to work & Sarah squirms her way out, the passage starts to collapse on top of her, as Beth urges her to move fast! Hence the cave now becomes a huge looming cavernous maw that swallows them whole, & closes it's mouth. The women are stuck in a giant cave complex, filled with passages, spreading out like veins in a hand, with no idea if there is another way out. A true horror, that is completely plausible! As the women search for a way out, with many a suspenseful scene, the cave becomes more & more ominous. They find ancient drawings from cave dwellers that suggest another entrance (exit) of the cave. It is here that all hell breaks loose, as their stalked by mutant cave dwellers for food, one by one. Not since "Aliens" has there been such intense action in a horror film, as the women punch, kick, bludgeon, & stab their way through thrilling scene after scene of survival carnage with the mutants. This is literally savage, & is filmed, acted, & choreographed in such a way that it sucks you in like a giant vortex, right into the action! The mutants make up is totally credible & genuinely scary, especially the female mutant. They look like a cross of humans with bat like features on their head & faces, true subterranean looking creatures, right out of a nightmare! To say much more about the story, would be giving to much away. I will say this, the film is a experience! An experience in terrifying claustrophobic horror. One has a hard time figuring out which is more terrifying, the cave & it's hopelessness, or the mutants? Both are a potent combination, & if it were not for the terrific cinematography, make up, ensemble acting, direction, setting, & editing, this film could've of been just another forgettable horror film. Thanks to director Neil Marshall, it's not! For he has created a true masterpiece of the genre, & though there have been similar films, at least in theme of cave creatures, this film stands as a true original masterpiece! The Blu-ray looks & sounds fantastic, if you don't have it, it's time to upgrade! Essential viewing for the horror lover! The Descent" 2005 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5I1q4KhKNU

Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
5 Stars = Masterpiece In my opinion, absolutely the best horror film up until the 50's. That decade spawned two great masterpieces, "Night of the Demon" & "The Creature From the Black Lagoon," but until then, there really was not a horror film in league with "the Bride of Frankenstein." This film can also can be construed as a science fiction too. Boris Karloff will always be the Frankenstein's monster standard to live up to, as will this film, though "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein" rivals it in many ways, but this is the original, all filmed in gloriously creepy black & white! This is blue print, & in some ways more than 1931's, "Frankenstein," for "Bride of Frankenstein," expanded the theme & expounded the horror, with a twinkling of black comedy many times over. A true cinema gem for all time & all ages! "The Bride of Frankenstein" 1935 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYD3-pIF9jQ

4 1/2 Stars = Minor Masterpiece Forget the cheesy poster! Maybe the best Vampire movie you've never seen. This little German gem is well acted, scripted, directed, & edited. The English dubbing is truly superior! A young girl gets inducted to a family of female Vampires involuntarily, because the head Vampire see's in her, the lost love of her life. The joys, the sorrow, the tragedy of being immortal, is so fleshed out in this film it is truly touching. You care about the main characters. A stake in the heart. This film is a minor masterpiece! Do your self a favor & see it soon! "We Are The Night" 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqL30aHMZtA

Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
4 Stars =Classic Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Mummy, & the Creature from the Black Lagoon, conspire together to take over the world for evil! Sounds like a Universal classic monster lovers dream, & in a way it is. This is the plot line of, "the Monster Squad," a 1987 childhood tribute to the classic Universal Monsters! "The Monster Squad," is a club of young misfit boys who have meetings in their tree club house. One boy's mother finds the diary of Van Helsing at a garage sale, & gives it to her son who is "the Monster Squad" leader, but it is written in German. So in one of the better scenes of the movie, he & his buddies go see "the Scary German Guy," who they all fear, so he can translate the diary. A funny scene, that opens up with "the Scary German Guy" holding a butcher knife, then bending over & saying, "last chance for pie," as he slices the red cherry pie, which did not escape me as a good wink at the audience, LOL! "The Scary German Guy" reads part of the diary, & our heroes find out that every 100 years the balance of good vs. evil can be tipped in to evil's favor, if the "Amulet," a protector of good is destroyed. It can only be destroyed at the stroke of midnight, exactly 100 years after the last time it was vulnerable. Dracula knows this, as he tried to destroy the Amulet before, & has gathered all the famous monsters together in a quest to find & destroy the Amulet. "Monster Squad" is filled with funny scenes, as the members of the club try to stop Dracula from taking over the world. One such scene is in an old mansion where Dracula has holed up, looking for the Amulet. Three members go in & are confronted by the Wolfman. A member called "Fat Kid" is face to face with the Wolfman & is screaming what should I do, & another kid says, "kick him in the nards." Fat Kid" says, "Wolfman don't have nards." The other kid says, "kick him! Fat kid kicks Wolfman in the groin, & the Wolfman bends over in pain, as "Fat Kid" says in astonishment, the immortal words, "WOLFMAN GOT NARDS," & runs for his life! Their are several funny scenes like this, but it is Phoebe, the little sister to "the Monster Squad" leader, that steals every scene. About 5 years old, the definitive dictionary definition of cute, with a mouth that spouts out the funniest lines, & quite capable of swearing too, really makes this film, especially when she & Frankenstein meet up, & she takes Frankie to meet the boys & they all run! Also of note is the great part played by the dog, a Beagle, who is one of the team! Famous make up artist Stan Winston (the Thing) & crew does the make up & special effects. This is not his best showing, but at the same time, the monsters fit the movies theme, just about scary enough for 12 year olds, but not to overboard, as this is a children's horror/comedy, not an R rated feature. So his make up works quite well in the context of things. "The Monster Squad," though flawed, is really a timeless tribute to all of us that grew up with the classic Universal monsters, for many of us were 12 & much younger when we would stay up late on Friday or Saturday nights, to watch those "Creature Features." It was a time of simplicity, a time of believing in make believe, the innocence of youth, that this film pays tribute to. Even today at 51, it brings back the days of endless summers, & long dark nights sitting by the television. Those were & are great memories! Notched up a half of star for nostalgia. Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE! What better to celebrate it than watching this film! If "Psycho" is the granddad of the slasher genre, then "Halloween" is the father. Sure you had before it, "Last House on the Left" (terrible movie) & by the same director, Wes Craven, "the Hills Have Eyes," great movie! You had "the Texas Chainsaw Massacre," another great film, but these films all involved families, or more than one in individual as the killers, not so with "Psycho," & not so with "Halloween." In these films, you had one character, who became an Icon to the horror genre, Norman Bates & Michael Meyers. "Halloween" does not depend on gore & cheap thrills to scare it's audience, but rather dread & suspense, & "the Shape," Michael Meyers, who seems to blend in & out of the shadows. Who is there in broad daylight one moment, & gone the next. What makes it more potent, is that we know nothing about him, other than Dr. Loomis's raving that he is pure evil. Meyers does not have a word of dialog in the movie, which also adds to the dread. He is a silent, anonymous, killing machine, with no rhyme or reason, our worse nightmare! Though this is not my favorite John Carpenter film (The Thing), Carpenter is at the top of his game here, he knows how to scare you, not with hit you over the head scenes, but quietly disturbing scenes. Such a scene is where Annie screams at Myers driving the station wagon, "Hey jerk! Speed kills!" Meyers comes to a squealing halt a 100 feet away & just sits in the car a minute, then takes off. It's those kind of scenes that make this film what it is, quite dread. Carpenter also wrote the soundtrack, which greatly enhances this movies scare factor, though he lifted the piano part from, "Wait Until Dark," with Audrey Hepburn, the soundtrack is a true classic of the genre, & this film would be less potent with out it. I have to admit, after 33 years of seeing this film, it has lost some of it's appeal to me, but when in the mood, it's still a terrific psychological horror film, that deserves all the years of kudos it has received! 5 stars = Masterpiece "Halloween" 1978 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2DWutxndgk

Got to love Carpenter's Halloween. I think I'll throw it on tonight. Black Christmas could be a contender for slasher father. It was clearly a big influence on Halloween.

Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
4 stars = Classic Out of the four films, two sequels, & two prequels (same title, different directors) of "the Exorcist," only one is really worth your time, "the Exorcist III," written & direct by "the Exorcist" author, William Peter Blatty. "The Exorcist III" really captures the eerie dreadful atmosphere of the first movie, that is, the first two thirds of the film. The first two thirds is filled with smart, often witty dialog, especially between Detective Lt. William Kinderman (George C. Scott) & Father Dyer (Ed Flanders). There is a plot hole here though, as Detective Kinderman is portrayed as Father Karras's (Jason Miller) best friend who preformed the first exorcism in the first film, & Kinderman (Lee J Cobb in the first film) hardly knew Karras, though in the book, there could've been more of a relationship there? At any rate, the first two thirds of the film is just filled with very potent, imaginative, horrific scenes. The fly ceiling crawl of the old lady, as she looks down at Kinderman & smiles. The giant surgical decapitation scene in the hospital with the nurse. The office scene where Kinderman is talking about Karras with the head Preist in the Preist's office, are just a few. The cinematography & soundtrack work very well too! But... (Spoilers) The film starts to fall a part (loses imagination) with the introduction of "the Gemni Killer," or should I say, Brad Dourif speaking through Karras's body. Not that Dourif is bad by any means. No, he is incredible in his performance, it's just that I feel all these scenes would have been more potent with Karras (Jason Miller) doing them instead of Dourif, for the plain fact it hits harder seeing the Martyr, Karras, being turned to evil, committing these crimes himself, than being possessed by a serial killer. Karras was the heart & soul of the first film, giving his life to save Regan's, so seeing him turned to evil would be all the more potent. Also, the last part of the film turns to mush, as old Satanic clichés (yes, I don't like that word, but true) are brought out of the closet, snakes, the floor cracking & people rising from hell, gore, & a very unconvincing Father Morning, played by Nicol Williamson (usually a terrific actor, Merlin in "Excalibur) exorcising "the Gemni Killer" from Karras's body. As a matter of fact, the only thing that works is when "the Gemni Killer" leaves Karras's body, & Karras says, "Bill, kill me now, shoot me," does the scene have any redemption. For all it's flaws though, "the Excorist III" is a very good watch! For two thirds of the film is almost on par with the original, & that in its self is very good reason to watch this film! "The Exorcist III" 1990 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKeCQ7EqDho

Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
4 1/2 Stars = Minor Masterpiece Ok, I know, people are getting tired of the mockumentry hand shaken, but not stirred films, but I can't resist a giant monster movie, especially one as good as this! A giant monster with deadly offspring attacks New York City. We don't know where it came from, what it is, other than it can topple over 50 story buildings & is multiplying quickly with fast moving/growing offspring whose bites bring on a deadly infection to whomever is bitten. It is impervious to non-nuclear military attacks, & is wreaking havoc on to the city. Sounds like your typical Japanese giant monster film, right? Yes, if that was what all this film was about, but it isn't. That's where the handheld POV camera comes in & tells the story of mass hysteria, & the horror of an unknown terror. Of how a group of young New Yorkers try to survive the onslaught of not just the monster, but the military trying to destroy the monster, & a city collapsing around them. It delves into these characters psyches as they confront certain death, time & time again. How they band together for the good of all & the good of one. There is no fairy tale endings here to make the audience feel better. There is no sparing of heart rendering scenes. This is mayhem, wicked, brutal, & heart breaking. This is what it would be like if this scenario was to ever happen. Real people with deep emotions & attachments losing their loved ones & their lives. "Cloverfield" is a clever heart pulsing thrill ride. It smartly never lets you get to many good glimpses of the monster. Most of the time a shot of the head, the body, the extremities, which make the beast all the more threatening. "Cloverfield" knows how to get your attention! A particularly great scene is one of the head of the Statue of Liberty flying of it's shoulders & landing blocks into the city, rolling to a stop in the middle of a street. A great parable to 9/11. A great parable of pure unadulterated horror of something so incomprehensible happening, that it overwhelms the logical mind. A true demonstration of just how naked & vulnerable we truly are as a species, whether it be against our own kind, or nature. Yes, "Cloverfield" is an allegory to a path that many fear the most & expect the least. A path that has been traveled down time & time again in the real world, but we never would think it would happen to us, until it does. "Cloverfield" 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMPhFVVV-Gw

3 1/2 stars = Very Good Unless you're a hardcore George Romero fan, & a fan of the original "Day of the Dead," this 2008 remake is a much better film, though the original's Tom Savini make up was incredible! To bad everything else was dangling dead rotted Zombie testicles. "Day of the Dead" 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaIeBjwUoRw

FROGS THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK FUNHOUSE PROPHECY (79) PUMPKINHEAD MANIAC GARGOYLES GRIZZLEY BEAST WITHIN IT'S ALIVE MOTEL HELL FROGS - I think I've seen this film, but if I have it was so long ago I just can't remember anything. THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN - I've heard about this film for decades. Based on a true story if I remember right? I've read it was very good, but one of those things I've just not got to...yet. LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK - Seen this a couple of times. At the drive-in theater first when it came out. Not bad for it's ilk, but there is a film from that time period called "The Creature From Black Lake" I like much better. Even has Jack Elam in it! Very hard to find a good copy. FUNHOUSE - Yes I seen it several times, but I have to honestly say, I can take it or leave it, though I know there are those who love this film. PROPHECY (79) - Saw it when it came out in the theaters. Loved it back then. Have the DVD, but it's just not a good as I remember it. Did a review on it here. Still, worth a look! PUMPKINHEAD - Fantastic film from make up artist/ director, Stan Winston! I've wrote a review here on this film. Minor masterpiece! MANIAC - I have, but I just don't remember much. It is highly touted by it's fans. GARGOYLES - Love this made for TV film! I watched it when it was first broadcasted, early 70's if I remember? The main Gargoyle rules! His suit head was a precursor to Stan Winston's make up face for the Tim Curry's Devil in "Legend." GRIZZLEY _ Yes I seen it, but it's been so long that I don't remember anything. Check out the 60's movie "Night of the Grizzly," with Clint Walker & Jack Elam, great little movie! BEAST WITHIN - I've heard the title for years, but I don't think I've seen this one...Wait! Maybe I have, if it's a werewolf film made around 1975. If it is, it was ok, I'll have to google it & see if it's what I think it is. IT'S ALIVE - Been a long time. So long that I'd have to watch it again. Remember when it hit the Drive-ins! MOTEL HELL - Funny shit here! Been a couple of decades, but great black comedy! Thanks for posting!

Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
5 Stars = Masterpiece What a great surprise "the Others" was! In the wake of a glut of "Sixth Sense" clones, I see the dead, I talk to the dead, I help the dead, the haunted house/ghost movie sub-genre was getting as stale as the overworked Zombie sub-genre. Dozens upon dozens of films, both big budget & straight to video haunting every rental DVD shelve in six continents! I was tired of seeing people in movies seeing the dead, ad nauseam. So why was "the Others" so different? First of all, it was not a "Sixth Sense" clone, if anything, a anti "Sixth Sense." It was not a modern day haunted house/ghost film at all, but harkened back to "The Innocents" from 1961. It also reminded me of another great early 60's film, that was not a horror film at all, but had it's spooky moments, 1962's, "To Kill a Mockingbird." Both these films had a brother & sister as main characters. Both these films had a single parent main character, or in the case "of "the Innocents," a nanny/governess, who was hired by a single parent. Both those films had strong bonds between the siblings. "The Others," mother character, & "the Innocents," governess character, were both overwrought to the point of insanity. All three films share a very intimate almost child like opening soundtrack. "The Others" & "To Kill a Mockingbird," especially. All three films were intimate, not a large cast, nor did they need one, though "To Kill a Mockingbird" did have a larger cast of characters, though it still remained a intimate childhood story of a adult world. It has been said that Nicole Kidman's performance as "Grace Stewart" in "the Others," is the greatest of her career, & I have to agree. Nicole is the epitome of a woman pushed over the edge of insanity. A nervous break down performance if there ever was one! It must have drained her, not only mentally, but physically. The siblings, Alakina Mann as "Anne Stewart," & James Bently as "Nicholas Stewart," provide this film with some of the strongest & most believable child performances I've ever seen! The supporting cast was excellent as well. "The Others" work so well because a taught & sturdy script, claustrophobic cinematography, spot on directing, & a soundtrack that is subtle, & when need be, crashing down like thunder. But it is the totally convincing acting, the effective spooky yet elegant mansion, & the tense well done sound effects that make this movie genuinely scary. It is the imagination of what could be lurking around the corner or behind a door that raises the prickly hairs on my neck. The thump in the dark. It is the twist ending that just blows me away every time I see this film! It is truly, the anti "Sixth Sense," just when the badly over trodden haunted house/ghost sub-genre needed it the most! This Blu-ray is highly recommended as a upgrade. Colors, images, lighting, & sound are about as good as it gets for a film like this! "The Others" 2001 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQRTqpf8f4w

as you can tell....i am a horror movie fan !! DISCUSS Huminoids from the deep - Always been meaning to see this Roger Coreman film, but I have not. Soon! phantasm - This film & it's sequels, has a huge cult folowing , but I just never really got it, or should I say, got in to it. I remember the movie trailers on television when it came out, looked real cool, but it just never did anything for me, just to disjointed. scanners - Is there such a thing as a bad Cronenberg film? I don't think so. Marvelous film, marvelous concept! food of the goods - You know, I think I've seen it, but maybe not. Giant man mutated insects on a island? terror train - I believe this is the film with Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee. They find a prehistoric man who comes back to life on the train ride home. No, I have not seen it, but have heard good things. the car - Next to Steven Spielberg's first movie, the made for television masterpices "Duel," this is my favorite haunted/possessed car/vehicle film! Filmed in & around St. George, UT. Where my mother was born & raised! duel - Just talked about it. A masterwork! The best horror made for television movie along with "the Nightstalker." empire of the ants _ I don't think I've seen it, unless it was a 1950's, early 1960's movie with Charleston Heston? A tropical plantation gets over run by fire ants. tarantula (55) - Great film from the best Sci-Fi/Horror director of the 50's, Jack Arnold. Not as good as "the Creature From the Black Lagoon or "The Incredible Shrinking Man, but great never the less! Check out "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" & "The Deadly Mantis!" the tingler - Ah, Vincent Price. This film does have it's charms! baron blood - Can't say I've heard of this one, but who knows? burnt offerings - Yes, very good film. Always liked Oliver Reed. Good ghost story! If you like Oliver Reed, check out his first film, the minor masterpiece, "Curse of the Werewolf! 1961 - Hammer films. children shouldnt play with dead things - I've known about this film for years, but never have seen it. I understand is is very good.

Re: Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread
4 Stars = Classic Here Romero goes the mockumentry route, & you know what? He succeeds in making his best film since "Creepshow," & his best zombie film since "Dawn of the Dead," & in many ways, surpassing that mall muncher. A group of college kids are out in the woods making a horror movie. Little do they know that the undead have risen, & that they will actually make a film documenting the true horror surrounding them, as they try to survive. "Diary of the Dead" is a well acted & directed Zombie film. Romero's direction tends to meander in many of his other films, but here he is as straight as a stiff corpse! Same has to be said about the script, as with many of his films, the combination of bad script, bad direction, & bad acting make for a bad movie, but not here! Sharp, intelligent & intriguing, "Diary of the Dead" may be Romero's best Zombie script ever, if not his most visionary or original. Truth be told, I feel that Romero is a sometime brilliant, but overall, a highly overrated director. When he is on his game, he is one of the best horror film makers out there, but more often than not, he misses the horror & makes the horrible. He was a visionary director with his ultra ground breaking (no pun intended) debut, "Night of the Living Dead." He made what I feel is the best horror anthology ever in Creepshow," but everything before & after just have not met those high standards. People will point to "Dawn of the Dead" as his classic, but it really does not hold up as well today, especially in regards to such recent films as "28 Days Later" & "28 Weeks Later." Even the "Dawn of the Dead' remake is more potent in it's horror than the original, but it does lack the black comedy & humanity of the former. With "Diary of the Dead," Romero has redeemed himself as being a great Zombie film maker again, if not a original visionary anymore. 4 Stars = Classic You could do a lot worse than to check out this obscure sci-fi/horror, alien possession little gem of a film. With good acting, taught direction & fine effects for it's budget. A great little plot line, all set in the deep back woods of Oklahoma! "Splinter won six awards at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival: Best Editing, Best Score, Best Special Effects, Best Make-Up, Best Directing and Best Picture." - Wikipedia It will put a spike right through your little horror loving heart! 5 Stars = Masterpiece Is it a werewolf movie? Is it a Kung Fu action film? Is it a historical costume drama film? Is it a political intrigue film? Is it a secret society film? Is it a separation of the classes film? Is it a fictionalized film based on true events? Well... is it? You bet it is, & more! Fast moving, beautifully filmed, "Brotherhood of the Wolf is a breathtaking film! Really, the cinematography is one of the most striking, lushly beautiful, I've ever seen! A great cast of convincing characters. A plot that thickens like coagulating blood as it moves along. Fantastic action sequences, truly filmed & choreographed for maximum intensity, are hypnotizing! Other sequences expound pure terror, as we watch the victims flee for their lives. You can see the terror in their faces, eyes, & bodies. You can feel it! These scenes are filmed & choreographed with raw gut wrenching horror, rarely seen on film! All the more powerful because you can't see what is hunting them! Your imagination goes in to overdrive, as the camera stalks them! Truly a genre jumping film, with bold originality of vision! Whether your watching the sub-titled version, or the English dubbed version (which is very well done), this film exudes mastery of execution, style, & substance! All is not what it seems in this film, & you'll be on the edge of your seat through out it! Truly one of the best post 2000 films created, & to think, I almost did not go to the theater because it was first released with sub-tittles! Glad I didn't make that bad decision! Now we need a Blu ray in the states! "Brotherhood of the Wolf" 2001 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7DTv2uBA7I
