They have Brooklyn style pizza at Domino's now. I'd like to try it, as that's probably my favorite style of pizza.

But here's the stupid part. They have advertised $9.99 for a large one topping Brooklyn style pizza. That's reasonable.

But for $19.99 you get the Brooklyn special. One large one topping Brooklyn style pizza, an order of cheesy bread, and a 2l Coke. Their cheesy bread only costs $4.99. So you're basically paying 5 dollars for a 2l Coke. What a ridiculous deal. They probably don't even charge more than 3 dollars for their 2l Coke products anyways.

I really like Domino's (seriously, who doesn't?), but this deal has greed and phail written all over it.

Dominoes sucks. Seriously.

I recently had the chance to try some of their pizza for the first time in years. New and improved? No, it still tastes like shitty Dominoes...which is 150x worse than any other pizza shop around here. My guts were also royally messed up for 2 days after eating it.

There's also something seriously unsettling about the "cheese" they use. I put a slice in the oven to re-heat and the cheese WOULD NOT melt. It burned and got random black spots, but it was still solid as a brick long after the crust and all the toppings started to turn black. It's also worth mentioning that my cat usually FREAKS OUT over cheese, but every time I offered him some he sniffed it and reacted as if I just offered him the TV remote. He wouldn't go near it.

I made some pretty damn good pasta yesterday. I put ground chicken, mushrooms, and celery in a pan, and seasoned it up with a mix of garlic, garlic salt, celery salt, basil, parsley, oregano, poultry seasoning, lemon pepper, and a splash of Worchestershire sauce. Then I made a mushroom/white wine sauce for it. I mixed in the pasta (rotini) after it was cooked.

I don't remember what I posted.

Assuming it was a simple tomato sauce...

1 onion - diced
1 rib of celery - diced
1 carrot - diced
an assload of garlic - minced
2 or 3 large cans of tomatoes (can be whole, diced, crushed...just avoid any that say "sauce")
whack of dried thyme
whack of dried oregano
Salt + pepper
Olive oil

1. Get a big ass pot onto medium heat and add some oil. When oil is hot, add onion, celery and carrot with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently until veggies are soft (5-8 minutes).

2. Add garlic and dried herbs. Cook another 1-2 minutes.

3. Crank the heat up to full whack and add tomatoes and a bit more salt and pepper. Stir well.

4. When sauce comes to a boil, reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.

5. When sauce is done, kill the heat and taste it. Re-season if needed. Add to pasta and devour.

Options:
- If you prefer a smooth sauce, use a blender to puree it. If using a regular blender, only add a small amount at a time (no more than 1/2 full). Or use an immersion blender (aka: "stick" blender, boat motor, etc) right in the pot.

- For a bit more "body", add a spool full of tomato paste at the end of step 2.

- If you want to add some wine to the sauce, do this at the start of step 3. Once wine has mostly evaporated, add the tomatoes.

- If you want a spicy sauce, add a generous amount of red pepper flakes at step 2. Add more at the end if it's not hot enough.

- Want meat in there? Pan sear (or oven roast) some italian sausages and/or meatballs, then add to the simmering sauce early on until the meat is cooked through. The longer it simmers in there, the better all that shit will be. Just be sure to skim most of the oil off that will collect at the top of the sauce.

So, the new someone special in my life is supposed to be on a vegan diet for his health. He cheats constantly, but I want to be encouraging, since the side effects of him not being on the diet could be congestive heart failure, stroke, or heart attack.

It's time to learn some new tricks to throw in my culinary bag.

I come from Canada too! 2am in Toronto or Montreal does not preclude awesome food from wicked joints. In fact, in these, our much maligned big cities, some restos specialize in serving latenite drunkos, and some just do gorgeous food 24/7 round the clock. Do you need some recommendations? :)

I don't live in Toronto or Montreal so it doesn't help much! :(
There are some decent places around, I get that. Even here in Ottawa it's pretty alright if you know where to go. I don't remember exactly why I made that comment you quoted, I believe it was quite a while ago and I'm too tired at 5 am to find it in here, lol, but I spend a lot of time outside the big cities and the selection can be pretty darn limited here in Canada unfortunately. But the big cities are great for sure! :)

I understand Toronto is a fine city but to use it, and it alone, as an example for the whole of Canada is just silly.

Whoa whoa whoa, hold the shitbasket there Cheops... There's more to Canada than Toronto? I call bullshit.

Not really sure if you're trying to tell me I'm being incredibly obvious by pointing that out, which I'm well aware of. But I'm simply all too used to people from Toronto using the city as a measuring stick for the rest of the country which should not be the case at all. Considering we're discussing food, the amount of immigration that goes into Toronto alone has resulted in a fairly unique culinary atmosphere in that city which is really not reflected anywhere else in Canada, even the other major cities.

 Travelling through Canada has led me to my understanding of the differentiation between Toronto food and, say, Alberta food, or Maritimes food. There are distinct regional differences, and only a stupid person would not recognize that fact. Torontonians who appreciate food tend to be the people who appreciate the differences between Atlantic and Pacific salmon, and respect those fishermen; the people who are happy to pay a little more for locally grown peas or peaches or locally farmed milk or cheese or pork; the people who actually appreciate the work and value of Canada's farmers; even though apparently we are those douchebags from that rich city.
