Even people who hate Michael Bay's movies - which is to say, people with eyes - tend to give this one kudos as the one Bay movie that's pretty cool, and I've long wondered how much of that is nostalgia talking.
Seeing it now - I'm not sure how much of it is nostalgia, and how much of it is just that Bay's bag of tricks was a bit fresher in 1996. But it's a Bay movie through and through - lots of explosions, swinging-dick dialogue, and guys stepping slow-mo out of hot-shit black cars, hot-shit black helicopters, and hot-shit black prisoner transports.
What sets this one apart is the sheer charisma of its leads - sure, the plot went from stupid before 9/11 to UNTHINKABLY stupid after 9/11, but...Ed Harris, man. I'd follow that guy into stupidly misguided battle, sure, why not. And it's rated R, which is a little unusual for this guy.
The best of Michael Bay's movies...okay, fair enough. Just remember that such a distinction is like being the best musician in Limp Bizkit. I think this and the two Bad Boys movies he did have gotten an R rating. That is correct. He has also produced (as opposed to directed) a few movies that had R ratings.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
I really want to post the Wreck-It Ralph poster since we bought it last Friday, but I've only seen the beginning, end, and a couple parts in the middle so far. I think my son has watched it about five or six times since then. Not bad for a blind buy.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
One of my favourite sci fi movies. A really solid cast all around. Love the split Russian/American crew dealing with the tension and pressure amongst each other while nuclear war is on the verge of breaking out between Russian and America back home. To be honest I enjoy this one more than 2001: A Space Odyssey. Highly recommended to space geeks that have yet to see this. Would have loved to have seen this film in the theatre in '84.

The Dark Knight Rises
I've watched this twice now. I certainly didn't expect it to even be in the same league of rad as its predecessor and it wasn't. I enjoyed it though overall and enjoyed Bane. Complaints:
1. Crane is even more worthless in this one than he was in the last one. Why did they bring him back at all after the first one?
2. Bane got shot and killed by Catwoman on the batbike? Seriously? Lamest supervillain death ever.
3. The Alfred/Bruce parting was abrupt and lame.

Had a craving to watch it after reading the thread about the third one.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
Haven't exactly been keeping up to date on the "family-oriented CGI film" thing but a friend recommended this movie and I really liked it. It had lots of things I liked: - stereotypical, exciting Scottish music and scenery to match - a plucky, hot-headed hero (you could say heroine but technically a heroine is a "damsel in distress" type not a "perfect archer on horseback" type) - billy connolly - big black fucking bear tearing shit up i watched it and thought, "i wish i had kids to watch this with."

False. That was easily one of the best parts of the film.

Definitely a great release by Pixar. Those people sure know how to make a good animated film.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
The characters in the film were good, especially the lead and her father. But storywise, I thought it was the most straightforward and least interesting Pixar film in a while.

My original assumption is that she went out and had wacky adventures with a boy and arrow. I was a little disappointed that it just stuck by the same location and dealt with her relationship with her mother. Still, aside from assuming it was about something else, it was pretty darn good. The highlight for me was her wacky-ass father and his "friends".

First problem with that film was, for me, when Catwoman sided with Batman.

That's a good point, and I hadn't really thought about it until you mentioned it. So, thanks for ruining it. Jerk. But actually, with that in mind, I think the film was really carried by the personalities of the characters. And the bear fight.

Definitely. Merida was probably the most memorable single character since Wall-E.

She's better as a character whose primary motivator is self-interest. And that wasn't the Catwoman this movie presented.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
Topic change: I started the first episode of GOT and I couldn't watch any more after the titles. I have to get HD copies. The scenery is just too interesting for me to watch this in standard def.
