Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
That poster promises a lot, but it only really delivered on the mystery part, kind of. Despite the charismatic players on display I could scarcely pay attention, and the resolution of the mystery depends on some horribly dated childhood-regression psychobullshit.
Tarantino caught some shit lately for saying he didn't want to make movies for too long because even great directors' last few films tend to be kind of terrible. How often do you hear about the Hitchcock films from hereon out? Another horribly violent Korean revenge movie, this time less as a cautionary tale about revenge than one about just not being quick about it.
This one has a schlocky, more obviously thriller-y edge that the "Vengeance Trilogy" movies don't have - the cannibal pal, the circle-in-the-car stabbing scene, there's even one point with goddamn parkour. And it all works - it's fun, horrible, and sad when it wants to be.

Watching Argo again. It's still a great flick.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
Torn Curtain and Topaz obviously have a lot in common - among Hitchcock's last movies, they're Cold War espionage stories on a relatively broad canvas, unlike the more immediate suspense concerns of most of his other movies I've seen.
They're also both overlong, overstuffed, and too often just kinda dull. I give the edge to Topaz, which I distantly remember watching half of on TV during my stoner days - the star-less cast of internationals (especially John Vernon's commanding presence) are more of a pleasure to watch (even after I stopped caring what was actually going on) than Paul Newman and Julie Andrews were. The ersatz Cuba is a lot more immersive and convincing than the erstatz East Germany, too.

The Funhouse is sweet! One of the best of the second-tier slashers. (and in early 80's slashers, there's no tier like second-tier.)

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
The Funhouse is one that I've somehow never seen. It always seems to come up, for example in threads like this. And then i'm like, "Shit, I need to finally get around to watching it". And then I forget. It doesn't help that no one sells it on dvd. Well, aside from the internet. But I tend to not really buy dvds online, except from Criterion during their sales.

For all the many, many movies and films I watch, I think this is my first post in this thread. Anyway, I saw this today at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Joaquin was even more brilliant than I expected, but it was too long by 20 minutes.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
Watched the 1977 post apocalyptic mega flop Damnation Alley. Starring George Peppard aka hannibal from the A team and Jan-Michael Vincent the pilot from the tv series Airwolf. Fox was releasing only 2 major sci fi epics in '77. Star wars being the other. Execs were banking on Damnation Alley being the blockbuster. How wrong they were. The movie apparently was bogged down by script rewrites as well as special effects difficulties. It took 10 months of post production just to create the radioactive atmosphere. It did do one thing right with the creation of the landmaster. A fully functional 12 wheeled vehicle that could float. It would go on to be used in other movies and tv shows. The movie can be found on youtube if you think this movie is up your (damnation) alley. Read a bit about the wasteland crawling vehicle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LandmasterThe informative review that peaked my interest on this movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsgWlTenQ8o

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
I just saw Argo last night and I can't believe they misrepresented history so badly. At least they could have put a disclaimer at the end of the movie saying that the actual events were different, but instead they basically lied about the whole thing and pretended that Ken Taylor had no role in the events. It is a travesty that Argo won the best picture instead of Lincoln which seemed to be a very accurate portrayal of history.

Killer old movie. I saw another Cannibal movie. What was it Cannabal Holocaust? I don't remember. Love them old cannibal videos. The only thing that makes them hard to watch is the killing of real animals. Anywho. Cool shit.

Re: Last movie you saw: Return Of The Poster's Deadly Spawn
A young Don Johnson stars in this 70's post apocalyptic film. He has a telepathic connection with his doggie Vic who is super intelligent and helps him sniff down food to eat and women to fuck. The first half is great desert wandering apocalyptic enjoyment. The 2nd half where he descends into the vault where the rich people live takes a turn into the bizzare and goofy. For anyone who likes a good post apocalyptic flick you should see this at least once in your life. The video game series Fallout gives a few nods to this movie. The whole flick is up on youtube. A nice one to watch late at night. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZOXHkaBoGI

I've really been wanting to see it too but being that it likely was only in select theatres in the city, i never bothered. P.T. Anderson is one of my favourites.
