Post Dr. Jimmy Jammers Thread of Horrors! Horror Movie Of The Day
Ok, I gave this some thought, & I'm going to discontinue, "Edited: The Horror Fantasy Sci-Fi Movie Trailer Thread." It been fun, but I got a better idea! Now that their is quite a few horror films in their full length on youtube, why not go all out, & post up some great horror, sci-fi, & fantasy films!

I'll still do my reviews, that is most of the time, depending on whether I have the time or inclination the day I post them. Otherwise, I'll paste & copy a description from Amazon, & give my star rating.

I hope that you like this idea, & I know that not everyone is going to sit by their computers & watch a whole film, but maybe some of you will?

Alright, lets get it on!

Though this film is titled "Curse Of The Demon" on youtube, it's actually the longer British version of the film, "Night Of The Demon, which is the superior version.

"Night Of The Demon" 1957

5 Stars = Masterpiece

A better 50's horror movie does not exist! "Night of the Demon," British title. "Curse of the Demon," American title, is one of the greatest horror films ever put to celluloid. The story of an American psychiatrist, Dr. John Holden (Dana Andrews) who travels to England to debunk wizard, Dr. Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis) of his status as a true disciple of magic & Satan. The only problem is that Dr. Julian Karswell may very well be the real deal, & he resents any outside interference with him & the cult who surrounds him out of fear.

"Night of the Demon" has all the creeping goose fleshed atmosphere to spew at it's viewers in massive slices of dread! A better crafted film of the supernatural, nary exists. The duel of wills between Dr. John Holden & Dr. Julian Karswell make for a test of endurance, Dr. John Holden's endurance that is, as one unexplained event happens after another. The clever cinematography, special effects, musical score, & intelligent script make for a supreme game of eerie chess, that will have you enthralled, engulfed, & emerged in it's enticing grip. This is even helped further along by the magnificent acting done by Niall MacGinnis, as the seemingly benevolent, level headed country gentlemen who owns a very large parcel of land, ruling over it in a magnificent mansion. It is his great acting that really makes this film come to life, though Dana Andrews as Dr. John Holden, plays his role as a stubborn non-believer & debunker of the supernatural like a snapping turtle clamped on your finger that carelessly bumped it's mouth. The two are this film, as conflict builds into battle, as battle builds into war, a war of reason against the unreasonable. A war of reality verses the surreal, with a take no prisoners attitude.

Helming this marvelous masterpiece of malevolency, is a director who has been noted for his apt handling of horror films, Jaques Tourneur ("I Walked with a Zombie & "The Cat People), he steers this macabre opus right into your deepest fears, the fear of not knowing what is real & what is not. The fear of seeing something in the corner of your minds eye that could be the difference between sanity & insanity. Tourneur pulls all the right switches & strings to make "Night of the Demon" one of the pinnacles of it's Satanic sub-genre & the horror genre as a whole, influencing countless horror films & horror directors afterwards.

If there is a glitch to this film, people feel it is the presences of the "Demon" it's self. It was said that the movie studio insisted on a monster being in the film, while Tourneur insisted that the unseen is much more disturbing than a full fledged monster in your face. The studio won out. I myself feel the "Demon" is a asset to this movie, though the effects are dated, they were handled tremendously, the "Demon" looking frightfully great to me as a child in the 60's watching this film. Even today, I think it was the right choice. You only see it in two frightfully eerie scenes. The beginning of the movie & the end. It perfectly compliments what this film is trying to purvey, fear! If they had used it more, no doubt, it would have hampered the eerie effect of the film as a whole, but it's used so commandingly sparingly, like pushing a doomsday button, that's it's impact can't be understated!

As I said earlier, there is two versions of this film, the British, "Night of the Demon, & the American, "Curse of the Demon." The British is the superior film, & runs 13 minutes longer. This is the definitive version, trust me.

"Night of the Demon" is a great movie anytime of year, that is night time of year, with the lights off, & your imagination on!

This film has been unfairly maligned over the years. It is indeed one of the greatest giant monster movies of the 50's, with great special effects for it's time, & they still look pretty good in some scenes today. Really creepy atmospheric dread abounds here, especially made all the more potent by it's fine cinematography! The sounds effects are very convincing too, as the droning noise the Mantis makes sounds either like a squadron of bombers flying towards you, or 10,000 angry bees ready to plant their stingers in your hide! The scene where the Mantis first appears in the window at the artic outpost is stuff of nightmares, at least for a young boy. The "Washington Monument" scene ranks up there with the best!

Highly recommend for giant monster lover! "The Deadly Mantis" is the greatest singular giant insect movie of all time!

One of the first & best horror films ever put out by famed British, Hammer Studios, was not a reworking of a Universal's classic monster movie. It was a film of a long told classic mythical beast, "The Abominable Snowman," or as it was originally titled, "The Abominable Snowman of the Himalaya," which I find a much more befitting title to this masterful piece of atmospheric dread.

Shot in eerie black & white, this is the tale of Dr. John Rollason, (Peter Cushing) who has long been looking for the fabled "Yeti" in the Himalaya. It is also the story of Tom Friend, (Forrest Tuker) who accompanies the good doctor with a party of mountaineers, a big game hunter, & Sherpas, to climb the dizzying cold isolated heights of the peaks above them in search of the fabled Yeti. Unbeknownst to Dr. John Rollason, Tom Friend has an hidden agenda, he wants a Yeti, dead or alive, to bring back to civilization. Tom Friend is a profiteering American showman, & he'll do anything to claim his prize. So here our story starts, at the palace of the High Lhama, who tries to persuade the team of men from looking for the Yeti, by claiming, it is but a myth.

"The Abominable Snowman" seethes with the eerie lonesomeness of the high Himalaya. It's beautiful, yet stark black & white cinematography, captures the true cold hopelessness of this film, filling it with atmospheric dread that few horror films ever achieve. It's equally foreboding somber soundtrack, accompanies the film like foot steps in a dark alley behind you, you look, & nobody is there, your scalp tingles as you anticipate the unknown. This is one of the great strengths of this film, the unknown! Another is it's storyline, & the very credible acting that comes with it, especially Peter Cushing as the protagonist & Forrest Tucker as the antagonist. Here we have the classic battle of good & evil, of two strong wills, both wanting the same thing, the Yeti, but using it in different ways. It's the story of two men driven by ambition, at any cost. It's the story of man, the monster, who thinks he is hunting a monster, but finds out that he is the real monster, & he is the one being hunted!

Absolutely astoundingly eerie dread filled scenes haunt this film. Yes, haunt! It's what you can't see that gives this film the potent aura of impending doom. A cry high above the men in the mountains, echoing lonely through the peaks. The sound of a team member's voice calling out from the snow filled desolation of night, the only problem, he's dead. Sounds of heavy footsteps creeping around the tent. All of this & more, make "The Abominable Snowman" a film that you will not forget!

If you even have the least bit interest in Hammer Studios, & how horror films that dig into your psyche through the unseen, can be much more potent than horror films that throw everything at you at once, then this is your film!

Oh, & one more thing, it has an ending that will stand your hair on end! A 10 on the creep factor!

Truly a great supernatural occult film. A rare & overlooked gem!

A ambitious professor is moving up the ladder of academia at his college. He is moving up so quick, that others begin to become suspicious, angry, & covet his success. Little does he know that he is getting help from the occult, the very thing he tries to dispel to his students. He attracts the wrath of another occultist who wants him dead.

"Burn Witch Burn" is as taught as a constrictors coil. It has ample amounts of suspense & dread. Tight direction, superior acting, & a intelligent script by one Richard Matheson (Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Night Stalker, Legend of Hell House, Duel), that is perfect for this film. "Burn Witch Burn" ranks right up there with the greatest 50's, early 60's horror films. It ranks up there with "Night of the Demon," & that is saying something!

SEE IT!

"The Night Stalker" is probably the best vampire film ever made for network TV. That is, ABC, NBC, & CBS. It was the highest rated debut movie for it's time!

Well worth the watch! - Jim

Amazon.com

"The Night Stalker
Wisecracking Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin) is a rumpled news hound plucked from the fast-talking newspaper flicks of the 1940s and dropped into the swinging '70s. What makes the eccentric Kolchak even more unique, however, is his nose for the supernatural, a trait that leaves his editor (Simon Oakland) exasperated and the police less than amused. When he insists that a late-night Las Vegas serial killer (who leaves his victims drained of blood and sporting twin holes in the neck) is a modern-day vampire, he's practically run out of town by the local authorities. Naturally, he stalks the vampire himself, an unlikely Van Helsing armed with a silver cross, a wooden stake, and his ever-present tape recorder and flashbulb camera. Carol Lynley is his understanding girlfriend, and Ralph Meeker, Claude Akins, Kent Smith, and Charles McGraw costar as the Vegas cops and politicians Kolchak systematically alienates with his abrasive charm and smart mouth. Directed by Dan Curtis from a witty script by Richard Matheson, the quirky mix of horror and humor turned The Night Stalker into a ratings sensation that inspired a sequel (The Night Strangler) and a short-lived TV series (Kolchak: The Night Stalker). The X-Files creator Chris Carter acknowledges the show as a major inspiration, and has cast McGavin in a recurring role as a retired X-Files veteran with an acerbic personality and a familiar rumpled wardrobe. Respectfully disagree, not about it's quality, but about the best made for TV Vampire comment. For my money that would be "Salem's Lot" :frankenstein: 8)

Each to their own Devil, & I'm not going to argue with you. After all, you're the Devil! ;) :)

Have you seen TBS remake of "Salem's Lot?" I like that one better. If not check it out. :)

Slam bang action, as a group of British soldiers out on a routine military exercise run into a pack of blood thirsty Werewolves! "Dog Soldiers" is a combination of "Aliens," "Night of the Living Dead," with "Evil Dead" overtones. The threat is outside. The threat is inside. The threat is the soldiers their selves, as they begin to realize that some of their own are infected, & could turn at anytime. The threat is also right under their noses, but their oblivious to it.

"Dog Soldiers" is really one of a kind Werewolf film. Sure, we've had multiple Werewolves in films before like "the Howling," but not as an all out attack, all the time, all at once, assault on your senses, & this is where this movie falters. There is so much Werewolf action, that after a few viewings, one becomes desensitized to it, & begins to find holes in the movies plot, like giant pot holes in a muddy spring road. "Dog Soldiers" walks the fine line of being an all out action film, with Werewolves, & a creepy, we only see glimpses of the monster(s) horror film. It starts out as a horror movie, but ends up an action film, with the last twenty minutes verging on the ridiculous, even for a horror film, as we get a surprise from one of the protagonists in the house. We get a soldier kicking a werewolf's tooth out, then boxing it & hitting it over the head with a frying pan, & he's winning, at least until another werewolf shows up! I have to admit, I do find this scene funny, & I'm sure (at least I hope) that this is intentional, but it also takes away the great dead serious atmosphere this film brings to us the first 60-70 minutes, & destroys it. The rest of the film follows suite, sorry to say.

Very few horror/action films work on both levels, one is the granddaddy, or should I say grandma of them all, "Aliens." The other example would be the granddaughter, by the same director as "Dog Soldiers," Neil Marshall's, "the Descent." "Dog Soldiers" is a test run for Neil, for what would become "the Decent," The test run was three fourths successful, but like all test runs, you figure out where the flaws are & fix them.

"Dog Soldiers is a highly entertaining film, with some great dialog, & fine old fashion Werewolf prosthetics, but eventually succumbs to it's own weight, where movies like "the Howling" rely on atmosphere & dread, "Dog Soldiers is like trying to run a three minute mile. It runs out of gas at the end, but still has enough horror & action that works to make this a classic, though no masterpiece.

The Blu-ray was nice. There is quite a bit of grain to this film, but that is due to filming limitations. It still vastly superior to the original visually, but I can only recommend the upgrade to the hardcore fans of this film.

Here is a classic Demon movie that spawned several sequels, & a inferior remake.

"The unrated version featuring additional gore & violence! It’s Halloween night and Angela is throwing a party, but this is no ordinary spook bash. Everybody’s headed to Hull House, a deserted funeral home with a shocking secret in its past and something evil alive in its basement. Now the guests are becoming possessed, and this party’s treats include tongue ripping, eyeball gouging, gratuitous nudity, bloody dismemberment and more. Welcome to the blowout where all hell is breaking loose. You’re invited to "Night of the Demons." Scream Queen Linnea Quigley stars in this twisted ‘80s splatter-fest directed by Kevin S. Tenney (Witchboard) and featuring grisly goreeffects by Steve Johnson (Dead Heat, Species). "Night of the Demons" is presented totally uncut and uncensored and loaded with exclusive new extras for the first time ever on DVD. " - Amazon

Unless you're a hardcore George Romero fan, & a fan of the original "Day of the Dead," this 2008 remake is a much better film in every way, though the original's Tom Savini make up was incredible! To bad everything else was dangling dead rotted Zombie testicles. Of course, testicles are not much use to Zombies, unless their Zombies from "Dead Alive, LOL!

This is my favorite Wes Craven film! The remake pales against this one in my opinion. This is the classic film scenario of the haves, & the have not's. The city slickers, & the backwards, dirt poor country inbreeds, gone totally berserk. Though one would be right in saying this film discriminates hugely against people who live deep in the wilds. This is more of a film on city people's stereotypes of the rural dirt poor. How the civilized urban family can be turned into a viscous killing machine, given the right circumstance, every bit as brutal & ruthless as their backwards adversaries. No one is immune to violence.

Ample amounts of dread, suspense, & most of all pathos, fill this film like a over boiling pot of water left on the stove. There are really tough scenes to watch here, as they dig their way into your brain like barbed fish hooks. The barbs are deeply imbedded into your psyche, not to be forgotten, not to be removed. The scene with the dead mother used as bait to kill the cannibals, is in my opinion, one of the most heart rendering, brutal scenes in horror. The pathos of this scene can not be measured. Yet there are scenes that put us in the city family's mind set, as we root for the families German Sheppard, out hunting & killing the cannibals, & maybe most of all, the final scene of redemption, as the passive liberal non-violent father, exacts his revenge at the end of this film. Yes, Craven knows how to manipulate us with the horrendous, turned into the heroic!

Craven is not a director that I care for a lot of his movies. His sensationalism preying on our inbred fears, can be very heavy handed, but when he gets it right, & he gets it right here, he is nothing less than visionary!

If you love "The Re-Animator," you'll love this!

"The second H.P. Lovecraft adaptation by Stuart Gordon FROM BEYOND is pure Lovecraftian science-terror. Out-there scientist Dr. Pretorious (Ted Sorel) and his assistant Dr. Tillinghast (Jeffery Combs) are working towards breaking through earthly perceptions and revealing a new alternate universe. They do this by stimulating the pineal gland of the human brain which enables people to see the strange creatures that inhabit a parallel dimension. Unfortunately these creatures can now see humans as well and they are none too pleased with it. Dr. Pretorious is killed by the floating monstrosities but the police blame his assistant for the murder and lock him up. Only Dr. Katharine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton) believes the insane tales of Dr. Tillinghast and it's up to her to shut down the experiment that threatens to unleash the other-dimensional creatures on this universe forever. Great special effects and solid performances by Combs and Crampton complement a near-perfect realization by Gordon of Lovecraft's vividly detailed and chilling vision of scientific possibilities. - Amazon

Ah the 50's! You got to love that decade! We had communists dressed up as space invaders, who dressed up as us. Then the big nuclear bomb! Giant communists, dressed up as giant monsters, & I love giant communist, dressed up as giant monsters, set free from nuclear bombs!!

One of the best of the decade was, "It Came From Beneath The Sea," a story of a giant six tentacle Octopus (YES SIX!), come visiting the "Golden Gate" city of San Francisco! Yes, the beastly behemoth slides & crawls it's way all over downtown San Francisco, grabbing a few cars, trucks, buildings, & people along it's merry way of mayhem! Excellent stop motion effects by wizard Ray Harryhausen, make this monstrous mollusk's, slippery suctioned cup tentacles, glue their slimy slippery selves to your TV screen, in great fashion. One of the greatest scenes of 50's Sci-Fi is where our giant Calamari (ok, it's not Squid) lovingly wraps it's six legs around the Golden Gate bridge! Really a fantastic scene, one of a few here! The cinematography & soundtrack are top notch for it's ilk, & the acting standard, though competent 50's B movie Sci-Fi fare.

No, there is nothing groundbreaking here, but it sure breaks water, & if your a huge fan of these type of movies, as I am, then this is a true classic from a paranoid decade, that produced some of the greatest Science Fiction film ever, from outer space, above ground, or, "It Came Beneath The Sea!"

5 Stars = Masterpiece

Here one of the greatest black comedy/horror zombies films ever made, this side of "Return Of The Living Dead" & "Dead Alive." Though much more surreal & deeper than both those great masterpieces.

This is the story of Francesco Dellamorte, grounds keeper for the city cemetery, who everyone calls, "engineer," and his seemingly half a deck assistant, "Gnaghi," who is almost a dead ringer for Curly of the "Three Stooges." It's the story of the dead coming back to life, "Returners," which Francesco & Gnaghi dispatch back to the grave with nonchalant, just another night at the job, repetitive routine, which really is very funny! Then Francesco meets the woman of his dreams at a graveside funeral service. What entails is a funny, semi serious, deeply black comedic odyssey, as Francesco may or may not be insane, questioning his own sanity?

Hilarious scenes pop up through this film like worms feasting on a corpse! We get a flying talking head! Oh, it can move on the ground too! We get a motor cycle zombie, that is literally a motorcycle zombie! We get boy scout zombies! We get a jealous husband zombie, with saplings trees growing out of his head & body! Yes, the laughs are many, at the expense of the dead, & the living too!

Like many Italian horror films, "Cemetery Man" is filmed gloriously! Richly colored nighttime cinematography is a real treat for the eyes. It's soundtrack is unforgettable, like many Italian horror films. Unlike many Italian horror films, "Cemetery Man" is a lucid, cohesive whole, filled with fine acting & script, though the farther you get in the movie, the more bizarre it becomes!

Really a gem of black comedic horror, "Cemetery Man" is for those with an open minded sense of humor, as some might find a scene or two offensive. So sit back, have a plate with spaghetti topped with bananas, & enjoy the singing disembodied head on your television screen! It's a scream!

3 1/2 Stars = Very Good

Here's a very good obscure little creep fest, with some black comedy sprinkled in for spice. Based on a H.P Lovecraft story, "The Unnamable" is filled with imposing atmosphere, & one bad ass she demon! The make up really is quite effective for the she demon, almost as much as her monstrous shrieks, as she goes bump in the night at the old deserted farm house, hunting the intruders who have entered her house!

You'll know if you like this film the first 10 minutes , as it sets the tone for the rest of the film!

There was a earlier version of this film made in the late 60's, probably even more obscure than this, "The Shuddered Room," with Oliver Reed. Which scared the hell out of me as a little boy, but didn't pass the test of time.

For you monster lovers out there, I highly recommend "the Unnamable," a little gem of a monster movie, that will shiver your timbers!

Here is one of the most hilarious Zombie spoofs to come digging it's way out of the grave! 2009's, "Doghouse" is an absolutely original take on the way over used & abused Zombie sub-genre.

A group of friends take off for a boys weekend of boozing, bonding, babe hunting, & all out good ole fashioned debauchery, as their trying to cheer up a buddy who has just went through divorce. They hire a mini bus with a hot female driver, & off they go into the English countryside to a village where another friend lives.

Right off the bat you know this is going to be a funny affair, as one wife or girlfriend gives each of the guys the third degree for taking off together for a weekend of fun. Yes, these guys are hen pecked, & ready to fly the roost. Little do they know that the hens in the village are ready to peck them to death, as their all Zombies looking for that special guy which just happens to be any guy who crosses their path. Yes, these hens have sharp teeth & claws, & rooster is on the menu!

What ensues is mass black comedy hilarity as our group of roosters try to get away with all their feathers still intact. The female Zombie make up is first rate & diverse! We have a hooker Zombie, a Grandmother Zombie, a barmaid Zombie, a beautician Zombie, a young bride Zombie, a teenage girl Zombie, a woman butcher Zombie, & maybe the most hilarious of all, a hugely obese housewife Zombie dressed in a huge tent of a bathrobe & hair curlers that loves candles on her cake made of men's fingers. Instead of having her cake & eating it to, she just likes to munch on a finger or two, or three, or four...

Yes, it is revenge of the hens, as the roosters are crowing for help & trying to fly away with clipped wings! One funny scene after another fills this hugely entertaining black comedy, as our roosters devise anyway they can to overcome the chopping block, but those hen's feathers a ruffled, their beaks are ready, & their tummies are clucking! This is one film where the rooster want to fly the coupe & never come back!

A woman crashes off a bridge into the Kansas River in Lawrence, KS. She survives, or did she?

Classic, creepy, low budget black & white horror film, that asks the question; is this real?

Watch & find out.

A milestone picture!

Here is a werewolf film with a different kink in it's tail. A view of Lycanthropy from the teenage feminine side. All in all, a very good howl, but no "Howling."

Teenage angst with big eyes, big nose, & big teeth!

Grandma has left the building!

Here is a greatly overlooked gem of a giant sea monster movie. Fun cast, fun story, good effects, & Famke Janssen is as hot as Georgia asphalt in July!

Treat Williams does a great (tongue in cheek) job as the captain of a boat for hire, no questions asked, carrying a cargo of tough guys, but things get a little hairy when the destination is a gigantic ultra modern cruise line ship with no one aboard. One by one they disappear in this fast moving, entertaining, Sci-Fi at sea adventure! It has a way of grabbing you, literally!

For Calamari lovers!

If there was ever a movie whose title is the definitive definition of the word, it is this film, & I mean that in a good way!!!

Thrilling, chilling, dreadful, suspense, are just a few words to describe this nightmare scenario! But, this could've never been pulled off without out the masterful acting that lies with in the two leads of this film! Astonishing! Might want to include the directing in there too, astonishing! Oh, & the script, astonishing!

From the mind & fears of author Stephen King!

Long before "Lake Placid," there was "Alligator!"

A classic little film with plenty of shits & giggles, & a few genuine scares, with moments of dread. "Alligator" is to Chicago, what "Jaws" is to Amity Island, though no where near as many sharp teeth as that toothy film. "Alligator" works, because it does not take it's self seriously, & if you don't, you'll have a Crocodile smile at this Alligator.

Worth a dip in the water!

Warning - This film has graphic scenes that may offend you. This film was rated X back in it's day, & surely NC-17 now. Administrators if you feel this film is not fit to be here, please remove it.

Long before "the Blair Witch Project," & much more gruesome (still one of the most gruesome films of horror cinema), & still controversial today, is 1980's, "Cannibal Holocaust," which featured live animals being killed, though not as cruel as it's led people to believe that did not see this film, it was still very unnecessary. The animals were killed as food, but you don't need to kill real animals for that in a fictitious film. It does get it's point over strongly though. Survival.

More gruesome is it's total depiction of cannibal debauchery, torture, & mutilation, but this film does have a purposeful question to ask, & moral to teach. Who is worse, us or the Cannibals?

Watch this film if you can, & find out the answer.
