Also everyone I had the yellow snow again from Rogue. Herra, thanks for putting one aside for me, but you can drink it now because I found a couple of singles on the shelf. They had NO issues that I was having with the 6-pack I picked up. No candycane/medicinal taste like before.

Strange

:?

Alright, I will keep that in mind. I actually didn't find the 6-pack yet, I was still in the process. lol. But that is good, it is really weird you got that taste. :?

It was the whole 6 pack that tasted that way. Must have been a bad brew. I never had a bad batch taste like that before. That's why I really believed at the time that they brewed it that way on purpose.

weird.

Something might have been in the bottles or leftover brew from a previous bottling. Oh well, at least you know it was just that 6-pack..

If I'm feeling better later on, the St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout shall be had.

Just opened up a Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar.

Not too overbearing on the Hazelnut, and very tasty.

Tonight:

I am very glad i grabbed this seasonal sampler. This Sleepy Time along with the Screaming Beaver DIPA were exceptional, and much much better than i expected, especially the Beaver. This stout though was something incredibly unique. Tasting the Belgian yeast in my stout was interesting as and tasty as hell. Not sure i would have called this Imperial though. tasted and seemed more like a single stout. Solid.

This one was my dip into the cellar, and a little surprising too. I'm sure it will make Stormland drool. Not quite as solid as i thought it was going to be. Much more hoppy than i thought as well. In fact it seems more like a DIPA, which isn't bad at all, just not expected. Lots of sweet caramel malt and very drinkable. If you can believe it, it reminds me a lot of the Super Collider from Flying Monkeys last winter. Nothing I've had from stone has been anything less than excellent, this one included. Not as solid as I hoped, for me, but still very, very good especially at 10.5%.

Possibly my favourite beer ever.

There have been some batches that were kind of syrupy with hazelnut, but usually it's amazingly balanced.

These are now on sale single at the LCBO. It used to be you could only get them in some six pack that was a mix of six different beers. No longer. Do yourself a favour and buy as many of these as you can. I think they're $2.75 each, but drink with caution. They're 10.5%.

I've had great success with Rogue beers. I wasn't fond of the Chipotle one, but the Maple Bacon and the Double Chocolate Stout were delish.

Also, I am almost done with Crimson Guard. Shit's ramping up.

I was quite pleased with it. And definitely no syrupy taste. The hazelnut was more of an aftertaste. I'll definitely need to buy more. Too bad they're 8 bucks a bottle here.

This was killer. It really was like mixing a dead guy with a stout. Both levels of bitterness basically cancelled each other out. It was nice. I would have liked it to be a little more heavy maybe? Propeller's - Special Bitter was really good too. Seems they are good at balancing their bitterness. All the images of the bottle below were too big, I got this crappy one instead. It no longer has the silly frilly top.

FINALLY! The world famous Gulden Draak is available in Toronto lcbo's in single bottles. For the past three years I've only seen it come around christmas time in the expensive assorted Belgian mix pack. It's pretty cheap too. Under $3. It's considered to be one of the top 5 best beers in the world. It tastes like utter shit when it's cold. Make sure you drink it at room temperature. The difference is striking. You can serve it chiiled and then let it warm up of course.
Image

The other beer I can't remember... Nosferatu? Something along those lines. I'll have to check it at home.

Both in my area, go figure! I'm gonna try and get these on Boxing Day if I can.

He made a Black Millipede Imperial Cascadian Ale. It was fucking phenomenal. Reminded me exactly of Flying Monkey's version of the Dark Cascadian Ale, but with a twist of the imperial touch. Was at least 8% abv and I just kept cringing as I thought of it being a simple home brew. I'm going to join him a couple Saturday's from now to lean how to make it. I'll be passing that information down to Herra too of course, and whoever else cares. lol

He also made a Fresh Hoped Pale Ale. It was almost perfect if you ask me. It had lots of sediment (I was warned, but forgot) but that didn't matter. Still tasted great and I didn't get that really back of the throat dry taste that one usually gets with an abundance of sediment. The reason I say this was almost perfect is because it had all the characters of an ipa, but without the uber bitter aftertaste. I couldn't pin-point whether it be closer to a west coast or easch coast approach, but that didn't matter to me. Had all the citrusy flavors and aromas one may pick up on when dealing with an ipa. I really enjoyed it.

I also enjoyed this on the weekend. It's been a while, but I managed to pick up on some flavors in some of them that I had never picked up on before. There were far more winter spice flavors than I remember in the Heather Ale. The pine was drank at room temperature and as per usual, perfection!

I've seen a couple mix packs with a different bottle inside. Might be a pleasant surprise one day to see that over here in Toronto. Just sayin...

Those homebrews sound awesome. Does he do all-grain or partial-mashes? I've seen those Historic Ales around, and I keep looking for the one that has the Seaweed beer in it and I can't seem to find it. :?

Well, to update you with his brewing details. He sent me the following text.

"Porter or Stone clone. I wanted to brew both of those again. Let me tell you about each recipe. The porter will have a good amount of crystal malt with layers of chocolate malt for color and roasted flavor. Pale chocolate will give a toasted biscuity flavor. The dark chocolate malt will give more malt bitterness. Porters generally have a hop presence. We should most likely stick to mostly English style hops. Perhaps we can throw in a non-citrus American variety. It'll be fairly balanced and drinkable by the litre (likely 5% avb). The stone arrogant bastard clone isn't really a classifiable beer. It's sorta a cross between an old ale and ipa. It uses a dark belgian crystal malt called special b that I love. It gives it a nice malt complexity and beautiful clear brown colour. The yeas will be English which allows the malt to shine but the hops are all chinook which is an excellent dank citrusy piney american hop variety. Although this beer won't be dry hopped, it has enough hops to balance the malt sweetness with a firm bitterness as well as carry through a wonderful flavor and aroma. Keep in mind this beer will have a higher bitterness (almost 100 ibu) and 7% abv. So although I like to drink a few, the hops and alcohol might not encourage it. What do you think? Porter or Arrogant Bastard?"

Arrogant Bastard it is! I'll have to pass one over to some of you once it's done. Especially Blasphomet as he is the only one close to me who has had the actual arrogant bastard ale. So, all this being said. It's getting pretty stuffy in here when it comes to brewing. Seems to be more people talking about it than I thought. Perhaps a home-brew thread will come out of this?

It'd be great for all of us interested to come together one day and brew up a batch at someone's place.

Holy fuck, I LOVE that Hazelnut, but it hasn't been in Ontario for like 4 years maybe. One of my favourite beers along with Fuller's Golden Pride.

Really glad I got that Beau's mix pack too. I've only had the Screaming Beaver so far, but it was excellent. I hear the others are great too. Too bad they only did a single run of this gift-pack. Maybe all the positive reviews will warrant more to be produced I hope.

Last christmas while on leave, I picked up this really awesome beer that had some cartoony pirates on it, trying to remember if it was that stuff, but regardless it was really good.

It was probably something by Heavy Seas, if not this exact beer. They make really good stuff, and the pirate theme is kind of their thing.

A year of age on the Choklat was great. I found it less cloying, the chocolate was a little more mellow as well. This settled into something even better than it was last year. Not a huge difference from what I remember, but it was definitely a little less chocolatey, and not quite as sweet. A great chocolate stout, and sweetness subsiding a bit is what i hoped for. The bottle i bought this year will now be aged for two years.
