yeah, it's called "baseball". There's a reason it's known as the Great American Pastime.

Terry Francona Effect:
Indians have spent $117 million in guaranteed contracts on free agents this off-season ($157 million with options). Spent $9.3 million in free-agency in the previous two years combined.

Re: 2013 Baseball Thread: Spring training underway
Not until summer. And probably not unless a team is extremely desperate for an offensive option. Just within the last hour, though, some Indians fans are screaming bloody murder that the team had the "audacity" to give Bourn 24. I mean, come on, people! Indians fans love Grady and we appreciate the way he played balls out, but the poor guy's body has betrayed him (cue the PED speculation; it's unavoidable). He's nowhere near the same player he was and was still ascending to be.

Re: 2013 Baseball Thread: Spring training underway
I love the news stories saying that the Blue Jays home opener sold out in one hour. Bullshit. The tickets were sold out in 30 seconds, IF there were even any for sale during the general on sale. What a fucking sucker I am. Went through StubHub and bought three tickets in the 200s. That said, my Dad and I go every year, so I wasn't gonna miss the game even though Ticketbastard/StubHub have found a way to legally scalp tickets.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000087 ... hare_tweetNumber 1 is completely obvious. Number 2 is a bit of a surprise, but Underwood is awful anyway, so I guess this is punishment.

Re: 2013 Baseball Thread: Spring training underway
I get the point, but a single game per team is a ridiculously small sample size.
Also, "penalising" for "obscure" nicknames and then being surprised that small market teams get more marks is just silly. Of course a team with fewer fans is going to have the more obscure nicknames, because no one knows or cares who they are.

Aren't announcers supposed to be biased? If you watch the same game through both broadcasts you will see a lot of difference with how the opposition is described. I've never really thought about it as bias, just 'the job'.

Tabby and Martinez aren't too bad with the bias... but yeah, I wouldn't see the big deal if they were. My problem with Buck is that "'Player's name' is one of the best at ____ in baseball!"... apparently every player in the league is one of the best at something in baseball...

If anything, Martinez and Tabler are boring. Neither guy gets excited at all.

Any broadcast that includes Michael Kay is going to be relentlessly and stupidly biased. O'Neil is pretty good but Kay sucks something awful.

Re: 2013 Baseball Thread: Spring training underway
I don't know if this should make a difference to me, but it does. I think TV announcers should be a little more even keel. Radio broadcasts though, i want my play by play and colour guy to be biased.
Joe Bowen for the Leafs used to be quite biased but has settled down over the years. Probably because the Leafs have been shit. I think it's easier to be biased when your team is winning a lot. Otherwise you just sound like an idiot.

Fuck Italy and fuck this country. Beaten by mercy rule in baseball by a European country... how the fuck did that happen? Disgraceful. I'm moving to Japan and becoming a citizen.
