They're great, two of the most versatile mics ever made.

Get both. SM58 for vocals, SM57 for instruments.

Yup. Though they use the same capsules, the windscreen/casing gives them a slightly different EQ and pickup pattern.

But really, they're more or less interchangeable.

I picked up a knockoff SM58, and I have an SM57Beta...

I thoroughly enjoy both.

the knockoff 58 sounds very much like the Shure version (in the applications I've been using it in), but I don't remember who makes it. I'll find out tonight.

one of the best and toughest mics out there for regular use, if it's for live shows, practicing, whatever, go for it. you said "durable" so i assume this isn't primarily for recording, but even in that context it has its applications.

SM58 is the standard vocal mic pretty much everywhere..

I've also used the Electrovoice N/D767a for a while, it sounded really good for my vocal type, but it picks up alot of the instruments compared to an SM58

This is true. I've also found that in a "battle of finding the best mic for the job" a 58 will occasionally beat out a 57. I've been surprised by this.

It certainly doesn't happen every time, but often enough to warrant having one or two around.

There you go. if anyone would know it would be Neil.

I've used them with great success in the past. If you're looking for durable then that's your best bet. Worth every penny and then some!

I still own and use the first two 58's I ever bought back in 1980... built like tanks!
And the 57 is hands-down one of the most versatile dynamic mic's ever.
Ya can't go wrong with a pair of each in your arsenal.

I've been mic'ing cabs with a 58 with the grill-ball removed, forever... more forward than the 57 grill-on... imho
mind you... there's often a Royer ribbon a few feet back to taste as well...
